A quick question for all of those who love to LST.

I have a girl in a 30L pot basically trained completely flat. I do this because I have wind and privacy concerns… and my other hobby is bonsai so I love the plant manipulation. She is growing outdoors.

So she was topped.. both primary branches trained to run horizontal (East/West). Secondary branches were trained out horizontal on the same plane, and of course perpendicular to primary branches. All good to this point.

Now she is producing her tertiary (third layer) branches off of the secondary branches.

My question is, if I am satisfied with how many tops I have from primary and secondary branches… should I remove most of the tertiary branches? I think the answer is yes if I don’t want to distribute energy and have many smaller tops.

I am thinking about “depp’ing” her in about a week so I thought this weekend might be the time to get her cleaned up before the flip.

I am always second guessing myself so I thought I would throw this out to the community…I appreciate any advice.

Outside is a different animal as far as tops and energy distribution.
The light generated in an outside grow has no change for ppfd through the canopy. cannabis is a light hungry plant and will swallow and process the energy and love it. I do not think the idea to cull tops in an outside grow for yield is valid. With proper nutrition support I have seen 10 foot tall plants yield pounds of grass. Doing in it a specific method with training can only enhance your yield and greatly reduce pm issues in flower.
Wish you had 2 plants to validate your ideas for training. Leave one alone and cull to maintain your idea on the 2nd one.
Good luck!

If she's outside, just let it ride, she can handle it. Trimming the new growths would simply be size control, so it's mostly up to you. Some growers fkn hate those popcorn branches so they take them off to reduce the amount of work when drying and trimming.

I for example only let the mains grow and take of all secundaries with an exception here and there. There's no tertiaries to be found on mine, simply for size reasons.

And nice to see another bonsai enthusiast! Growing some maple seedlings this year that are growing wildly

No such thing as, too many branches. At least on outdoor grows. The more nug sites, the better. IMHO. I smoke the popcorn buds first, anyhow. Let the good stuff cure. Save the best for last. 😂

I've still to get into my best buds, from last year. The little stuff was damn good, so I'll be looking to keeping my dick out of the dirt once I bust into them.

Okay… well this is excellent! I was thinking one way and so far all answers are the opposite. So I’m going to let her keep cruising I guess and see what happen. I better up her food!!

I grew the same variety last year in the same pot and completely left it along all season. She was way too tall and was getting really worked by heavy winds we have. I promised myself I would never do it again.. but she was a beauty!

I’ve had mold issues every year and have read.. and was oddly hoping… to grow smaller buds in order to avoid dense clusters and mold spreading. So lots of smaller buds sounds promising even though it will be an ass of work to trim. I am curious if it helps stop mold or at least minimize loss.

Good luck with your JM seedlings!!!

I appreciate your patience. 🙂
