I've been chased by a young one and almost walked up on one in the mountains San Gabriel River digging in a dumpster. It was dusk and I was taking trash to the dumpster when I saw movement some 40 or so feet from said dumpster. When he turned and i saw those red eyes I backed off quick and my trash was in the trunk out of sight. Slept in a tent on a blowup mattress in a sleeping bag. You know, the soft tacos the bear world
