I don’t have the balls to poach, our game wardens have more authority than local, state or federal authorities and can execute search warrants relatively easy compared to other departments. Your mountain Goats are huge, as are the Bighorn in comparison. Yeah, you're gonna need a bigger calibre than the Savage in most instances unless you are 50m away and can hit an apple sticker on an apple at that distance, understand anatomy, etc, etc. I mean, it's not impossible, most of my deer I've stealthily hunted/poached have been with a well-placed .22lr...CCI Stinger or Velocitor round, so it's possible. Round here, we older school gun owners shoot the gun we have at hand; often, we do not necessarily have the specific ballistic for the job, and we have to make do with the rounds we can scrounge up. Bush folk are pretty rough going down here. Genuine, lovely, generous and welcoming but tough as nails and about as resourceful as anyone you will meet.
I actually wish the animals here in New Zealand that are classified as Introduced Pest Species were reclassified as a resource that could be managed in a similar way to how your environmental agencies manage your species. Your agencies are protecting endemic species, which is the complete opposite of here, so I'm sure we will never get there. We have Whitetail, Sika, Red, Fallow, Sambar, an Elk population, Chamois and rare Himalayan Thar (moose too shhh) ALL classified as pests to be slaughtered freely by anyone with a mind to. That is fundamentally flawed thinking in a time when environmentlism is on the rise and forced scarcity is becoming a real thing. Where good people are struggling to put food on their families' tables. On private land it doesnt matter what calibre you use as long as you are not being deliberately cruel. Public land is the same as you..strictly no rimfire!

Down Under we have six deer species and differing pest or protected status state by state, a mess. A year ago one state banned all bowhunting, bonkers. To be a bang bang guy and/or a hunter here is difficult terrain to traverse. Grew up dreaming of hunting chamois and tahr in the mountains of NZ. Also, someone mentioned blowguns, the big bore .625 hunting versions are an absolute blast on bunnies and are capable of downing black bear and similar sized game. To add, my namesake, slingshots, are banned outright where I live, did I say bonkers.
What does NZ do with the latest generation of air rifle? You can now buy a .45 cal air rifle that shoots 850 fps with a 200 grain lead " pellet" this is 45 acp numbers. For NZ think 455 webley. I also see air powered crossbow hybrids that can absolutely hurl a bolt to stupid velocities.
