I'm new to growing, I live in mn and just bought a house. They were growing some kind of sativa plants in the yard. They are tall, maybe 8' and started flowering about 4-5 weeks ago, and last week we have a stretch where temps got to be like 40 at night and 60 during the day for 5-6 days straight. All the hairs are brown, and the trichromes are cloudy with a few even turning amber, but the buds look like they are about half the size they should be. Do I harvest now and just accept they will be small or do I wait and see if they fill in more, but then lose some of the the potency? I appreciate any advice, thank you!

I still do see some clear trichomes in that image and the ones that are amber most likely just matured rapidly due to the temperature stress you mentioned. Personally, I'd ride it out longer. Do you have any way to help keep the plants warm? I've never used one, but AI told me a frost blanket would help.

Bring them indoors, throw them under a couple lights and let them flower for another month or so!! 👍🏼

There are 4 plants, just chilling in the front yard lol
It sounds more like someone tossed some seeds out the window. In the old days when every bag we bought had seeds, it wasn't uncommon to see one sprouting up in the flower border or anywhere else we tossed seeds after we cleaned the weed. I doubt that is what happened in your case but the idea that they are in the front yard brings back memories. LOL

I would suggest getting some PVC from Home Depot and some clear plastic and making a makeshift greenhouse.

I’m just wondering if they’re planted in the soil or in pots

I would suggest not using clear packaging tape to seal. It doesn't fare well in any situation. Gorilla tape inside and out on seams. Hope this helps.
Much love from the MileHigh
