It probably depends on the cloth bag too. Some of the fabric they use is designed to work like those air pots, the roots hit the edge and then shy back away and I use those but I'm betting there's bags the roots will just grow into the side of the fabric and if you need a good visual, imagine trying to flush a live octopus down a toilet. 🤣

The roots will grow right through the bags under the right conditions. On a wicking base or a bottom watering system, the roots sometimes will grow through the bag and right into the water below it.

My plants first pot is always a 1 gallon plastic thermoformed planter. They make transplanting a very easy process. (I think I picked them up at Menards for roughly $1.00 each.) I pop them out of the plastic and right into the final home ... a 5 gallon fabric pot usually.

I've seen that before on YouTube videos. Some folks have them grow right up to the check valve.
