Hello all! Im a new grower that lives in the most northeast corner of nys as you can get!

Obviously with the coming winter im prepping to grow outdoor in the spring. I refuse to grow inside as I dont have the space available to do so. So with that said im limited to spring/summer/fall type grow.

I have a few questions with that said. Which in sure I'll have more to ask in due time. But my first is I plan on pretty much start from pot once germinated straight into their adult pot outside. If anyone is able to tell me thats from my area or known same climate when to start my grow that'd be much appreciated. I have 3 autoflowering and got a free photoperiod seed from North Atlantic seed company...the autoflowers are humbolt seeds and the photoperiod is a house seed(no further description).

I know to get peetmoss to thin out the soil which im using from my compost in the back yard which consists of old food, grass clippings and both chicken and rabbit poo. I might grab some compost from my neighbor which has duck, chicken. Cow and horse poo in it which will just about cover the entire manure spectrum. Im excited to grow and think I have a good spot to grow them(per state law cannot be visible from public view which im totally ok with...rather not have unwanted visitors.

On the opposite end of the grow aspect...time of year to harvest I know generalized grow timeframe for the autos...but with having a short growing season in my area especially with the photoperiod.

Im extremely new so I have a ton to learn. I also dont plan on evolving from the outdoor grow aspect.

Thanks all!

Hey Dman welcome to the farm! Outdoor grower here but I in Southern California do I play with plants year round.

Since you're just starting out, I'd suggest staying away from trying to build your own soil and just find a good commercial potting soil you can trust to work with. There will be plenty of time to play with things like that later once you've built up your own growing confidence.

Grow season for your photos shouldn't be an issue at that location, theres folks who used to grow weed in the Manatuska Valley in Alaska so you're good, it's the fall rain and humidity that messes things up way worse than any cold snaps before the finish.

Sounds like you've got some time to read up, talk to fellow growers and come up with your garden plan. Feel free to peruse some of the discussions here, and ask questions if you have them. You'll find lots of folks here wanting you to have a good grow experience.

Thank you very much. The crazy thing for me is i have zero experience with potting soil because ive always used compost mixed with local soil(usually the back yard) with veggies. There's also so many different brands i dont know "go tos" or "stay aways".

I would recommend using the information we have right here on the farm.
On the top left of this screen you will see 3 horizontal bars. Hit that and navigate to the forums section. From there scroll around until you find the section called grow diaries.

From there use the spyglass feature to add terms like autoflower and outdoor. These will then populate with diaries that have these topics and you can follow along and see successful grows and some not so successful grows.

Key things about starting indoor and moving outdoor.
During late spring and early summer here on the farm we get a spate of tiny little burnt up autos that were not hardened up properly. You must condition plants grown inside for the outside with timing and things like shade cloth and partial sun for a while until they can stand the IR component and the energy of outside sunlight
Timing of the grow for placement is also needed. I do not grow weed outside but the science is pretty easy. Look up the weather information for your area and look for an average night time temp in the 60's and find out what the daily light cycle is such as 13 hours light 11 hours dark and then run your plants at this cycle in preparation for the handoff to mother nature.
Every year we see a pattern where some folks run an auto at 24- 0 in a tent and throw it outside with a night cycle and they get confused and do the twisted auto herm dance. Some really weird plants... .

Can you get Coast of Maine where you're at? A few months ago I found a little bag of Blag Gold at the MCX and that stuff is nice and not marked up as a dedicated cannabis product. Fox Farm Ocean Forest, Burpee Premium, Miracle Grow Organic, Promix, Kellogg, any of them will grow weed just fine and shouldn't get fickle on you. I use EB Stone Recipe 420 and Recipe 420 Bhang. It's got good nutrients, I can personally vouch that it will feed a plant up to 3 months with nothing added and I don't have issues with fungus gnats or other pests coming with the soil. It also has good loam and holds water good and not too long. Buffers start to get sketchy toward the end of a second run so that's about when you'd want to do a recharge if you don't do it every reuse.

Honestly the only product mentioned was fox farm and it was the liquid supplements at our local true value. We have miracle grow at our local walmart. My concern is the overall cost. Considering ill be growing in 5 gallon buckets that will be drilled out to mimic air pots. So in my head getting pre done potting soil id be spending a small fortune on.

Miracle grow is garbage. Fox Farm Ocean you will have to definitely supplement more nutrients. The plants tend to eat them like a hot knife in butter. I don't do soil often. Thought I saw good comments on Happy Frog I think is what it was.
Good luck Welcome!!!

Fellow NY grower, Long Island. You should have no problem with advice on here. I grow in the ground, so I can’t comment on the pots. Any reason why you aren’t growing in the ground? You sound like you have access to great compost, great for growing weed.

Reason for not growing in the ground is my property has a ton of bedrock in the ground making digging difficult. Im not far from the area known as, "the Altona flatrock" if you're familiar with my area. Ive even destroyed a buddies tiller in a spot that me neighbor allowed me to use a few years ago for veggies...Oops. plus my property is on the small side with trees to the south and east with the house facing west. My thought behind potting is because ill have the ability to move them around to suit sunlight needs if I cant find a good all season long spot on my property. I may have found a good spot but will have to rip out rhubarb to use it....we dont like rhubarb anyways. But my other thought behind it is doing in pots will be easier to weed because it seems like my neck of the woods...no matter what I try im over run with weeds. At least in pots its quicker and easier to pull unwanted pest plants.

I'm nearby and late september if you're luck and still it will make you paranoid. I see a lot of mid october fighting mold every year.

Im hoping to harvest in September to avoid that lol my issue is this house photo seed I was given zero info on about. So I need to learn the physical progression as well. Im going to message the place I ordered the seeds from to see if they can give me basics of their house seed like duration, flavor and whatnot. To help me out.

Oh well there are good outdoor guys here, I'm indoor with just a little tent and botique grow. Don't shut it out completely man, it's not that hard. Esp autos.

If you mean indoor grow my wife doesn't care about me using but is a hard no about indoor for a multitude of reasons. Which a few of them i agree with. Along with startup cost of indoor grow with the orientation and lack of natural light in my house.

Our energy costs alone up here weve been getting raped. Not including cost of equipment. I also want to keep it away from our two kids whom are 4 and 8 years old. Being in the house thats too close for my comfort.

Kids sure. I use a 100w equivalent per tent and that's like a fridge bulb's worth of power.

Everywhere i turn i hear of people buying insanely expensive grow lights. And every indoor setup(because I dont know much for indoor...as a kid i didnt dare to grow and get caught by my parents outside let alone in their home lol) and every setup i see online for indoor i can't bring myself to pay for because id rather invest that into my kids soccer aspirstions. Being an athlete in school athletics were the best years of my life and our area has more opportunity than ever before to help kids become as best as they can to potentially jump to the next level. In the school they're at they have a bunch of exposure to that as well being historically one of the best small schools in the state. Just want them to do better with their lives than busting their knuckles building busses for a living like me lol.

Outstanding, looks like you have your priorities straight. Best of luck on your grows.

What particular problem did you run into with Miracle Grow?
