I would like to grow a monster plant outdoor this year. I grew a 7 foot OG KUSH last year. I started it late. If I start the plant around the the end of February and put it in the ground around mud may is that over kill. Any advice out there, and a good strain to use

hi there and welcome to the farm. I tried starting some early last year and everything I started early revenged or had some weird crap happened to it. Best bet I could tell you is start them in May and get them out there and start of June.
The ones I started early didn’t get any bigger than the other ones

Ya that's what I was afraid of. So I guess getting the 3 foot tall in veg then sticking them out door really is not going to make a big difference. I guess I'll just have to play around with it. Do you know of a strain that is known for get huge.

The moby dick or royal moby got 4 lbs off that in 2024 great smoke also

The problem with monster plants is the extended flowering to finish the plant.
A large portion of the country we get wet November's and October maybe 75, maybe 35 and rain for a week.

U could look at Humbolt Dream, for the genetics. Engineered for big, outdoor grows. 😉

. Just remember...ya gotta have room for drying that much weed, when it comes time for harvesting big , outdoor plants

Are u planning on using pots, or going straight into the ground. I recommend in ground for best results. YMMV

I'm in NE Ohio. Last year was the first year to grow in my garden. I used fish, peat moss w/perlite, composted cow and horse manure, mixed into my soil. Same as I would for my vegetables.

I start seeds end of March, then transplanted outdoors in early to mid May....weather permitting ( stable )

These are the two I grew.

Left is California Orange . Said to grow to max height of 6', it topped out at 8'. 50/50 Hybrid

Right is White Buffalo, 70/30 hybrid, Sativa dominant. It topped off at 10'

July (still in stretch )

Genetics play a big role. Proper soil and care is another. Other than that, it's up to mother nature.

It's easy....till it's not.🤣🤣. But I think it has more to do with a unlimited, non restrictive, nutrient/ microbial rich environment, for root and plant development.

Can't wait for this years grow. Might be a mini, "Mendo boys" grow. 🤣🤣🤣

Search for strains that will do well in your location. The NE can be tough on most strains, as stated above. Getting to the finish line , before mold and rot sets in, is our bigest curse.

I don't put them in the ground, can't because of local ordinance. But I start plants as early as January and I give them supplemental light until the end of May and then anything I want staying in veg gets supplemental light starting the second week of July. The days of the year that have under 14:10 of light I have the supplemental fired up, and in May before I turn it off I'm tapering it from 18/6 down to 15/9 and it works out. Dropping from 18/6 to a 15 hour natural day I've seen them start bouncing into flower and back out, and then hormones are all screwed up when it's time for true natural flip the end of July. Sativa genetics are going to give you the trees but if you want them to live up to their full potential start them early and put them on a good light schedule until Mother Nature can take over.

Regular seed which means you will likely get some males. Plant a couple extra plants and plan to chop males.

Sativa's won't finish where I live and pure indica is too dense and can mold so I go hybrid seed. If you want early plants buy genetics that say they finish early. Straight in the ground gives me best results. Don't treat them like indoor and snip leaves. Outdoor they use everything they got.

Get ready to support the plants later in the year. You'll be staking and tying them so wind doesn't snap them to pieces. I plant beside a garage and put hooks in to tie to. Wind protection on one side and being tied keeps the wind from snapping them.

Grow where they get the best sun and the best wind protection. Security from prying eyes helps piece of mind too because pounds of weed growing in a very public place doesn't help you sleep at night.

You will get bugs, and potentially crap you have never seen indoor.

I mix some manure in the ground before I plant. Nutes are rarely used outdoor compared to in. Water use is by eye for me. Leaves are wilting? Water time. Adjust to giving more water. When it gets hot they go through a lot of water. You want water to be convenient if possible.

Male plants can be used for swordplay.

Start them now. Match the photoperiod-light-dark duration- to the day you plan to set them out. Most of the problems with this are mismatched photo periods, and the plants will start flowering, and then reveg.

Match the correct photoperiod, and youll have no problems.
Also be aware that when put outside, they are slowly introduced to full sun over about a weeks period, or they can potentially fry because of UVA/B.

Yeah this screws up a lot of growers who get caught up in the indoor protocols of 12/12 for flower and assuming a 12+ hour day you're safe but in reality it's not 12 hours of light that triggers flowering, it's 10 hours of dark. So if you put your plant out in a 13 hour day it'll still potentially start trying to move into flower, and even moving to a 18 hour light schedule to a 15 hour day can confuse the plant and cause it to start it's stretch. So like you say, that's why you want to slowly line up the light schedule to match outdoors so they don't stress from the sudden change.

I did that. A few times. Now I'm cured and will endeavor to grow medium size plants from now on. The difficulty for me is the spraying for pests and disease. It gets unwieldy and tiring. But if that isn't an issue for you I wish you all the best. Truly.

BTW, almost any of these plants will grow, and grow, and grow regardless of the breeder's description. I grow mostly Indicas that are usually described as 6-8', and I've had many near the 12-14 foot mark, just as other growers have too.
