Garage Grow ---> Elev8 Gelato 33 | Grandpa's Cookies

Heading into final week of stretch, Grandpa's didn't branch out as much as the Gelato, and I didn't top the Gelato! lol, go figure. We still have these under lower than usual PPFD readings. Might start blasting them middle of the week. (700 PPFD abouts)

The plastic barrier doesn't do that great of a job as far as Fungus Gnats go, gonna have to spray top soil with some Bonners Soap this evening.

Checking n them this morning just before lights out...

I love the Grandpas Cookies and Ethos in general!! They usually finish up quicker than most strains, quick to pump out the buds πŸ‘ŠπŸΌ
I'm not sure, but I swear they (Grandpa's Cookies) have this cookie dough terpene going on.

The indoor grow has nothing of the Gelato terpene profile, seems all Wedding Cake at the moment.

have you seen those yellow sticky traps? I’ve had good results with those in combination of letting the top soil dry out a little more ( i know your living soil so that my not apply to you)
Definitely check out neem for treating the soil, it disrupts the fungus gnat larva

Yes, I use them (yellow sticky traps) in the other tent (indoors) but have yet to deal with them with these earthboxes, (Until last night). I didn't think fungus gnats would be a thing, especially with the plastic covers but I guess they find their way in. I like neem, (mostly nitrogen) and I'm in flower. And if I use nematodes (which I'm seriously thinking of getting) the neem would be bad for them. So would the Dr Bronners soap. Nematodes and BTI would be a great combination. But I just bought me another pair of Jordans (not cheap) and have to spread my budget out. Dr Bronners (which I have on hand) is the most convenience way to go this week. Talk to me two weeks from now and I'll be swearing up and down that nematodes is the shit. 🀣

There’s cannabis threads about nematode toxicity.

I'm aware of bad and good nematodes. Humans can get effected by nematodes (Hookworm) for example. There are "beneficial" nematodes that you can grab for the garden , those are the ones you want.

I've ran into some fungus gnats with the earthboxes. They are not as bad, I only see a few flying. But yeah them fuckers can get stuck to the bud lol.

I thought it would be good this past grow so I watered in mosquito bits to help kill the eggs. It definitely helped. It's hard not to get them tho with living soil because you need it damp for the worms or microbes.

Something I'm unsure about is the reservoir. I don't think they can lay eggs on top of the water but wondered if they could. As soon as my freebie is finished in less than a week I may give another drench with mosquito bits.

Full disclosure....I've recently converted to Chatgpt growing πŸ˜‚, it works, still organic, just with some AI help.
According to Chat, they (fungus gnats) can get into the reservoir via the fill pipe. And there is an inch or so of air between the water line and the bottom of the soil. It's plausible that they can lay eggs from the bottom of the soil. Chat recommended that we add some dunks or mosquito bits (drained of course, no corn bits) into the reservoir every 14 days.

Maybe some at the top to get the party started as well.

Anyways, I have nematodes shipping in, should be here by Thursday. And will be watering the reservoir with BTI every two weeks or less. The nematodes should thrive in the moist soil. Life of an organic grower. All part of it. If it was wrong they wouldn't be there. Good sign the soil is where it needs to be.

Application Tips for EarthBoxes
Because EarthBoxes have a sub-irrigation system (reservoir), you need to apply the nematodes correctly to ensure they reach the root zone:
  1. Drench the Surface: Mix the nematodes into a watering can (using lukewarm, non-chlorinated water) and drench the top layer of the potting mix.
  2. Water in: After applying, lightly water the surface again to help the nematodes wash down into the root zone.
  3. Use the Soil, Not the Tube: Pour the nematode solution directly onto the soil surface, not into the watering tube (reservoir). They need to move through the soil to find larvae.
  4. Keep it Moist: Keep the soil surface moist for about 1–2 weeks after application to ensure the nematodes survive and move through the potting mix, but avoid flooding the box.
  5. Timing: Apply in the evening or on a cloudy day, as UV light kills nematodes.
For best results, you might consider splitting the 5 million into two applications, one week apart, to catch any new larvae hatching.
