Greetings from S.E. Michigan!
Well, my birthday is this month, I turn 65. If your wondering why I'm sharing this tidbit of information on a grow forum, it's because my wife loves me. You see, just after Christmas this past December, I said to my wife, honey, you don't mind if I do a little gardening this summer in the backyard, do you? And she said, no, you can have a little grow if you want, just don't go back to growing indoors. Ah, you see back in the day when I first bought the house I live in now, about 25 years ago, I grew indoors. I had a 10x15 grow room in the basement. 400MH and a 1000HPS, cabinet with T-5's for seedlings and babies. I was rocking a crop every 90 days. I grew for about 10 years and then my job took over. when your lights are on 12/12 and you go to work before the lights come on, and you don't get home until the lights are off, you really can't grow. So I traded by lights to a guy for some homegrown and I have been going to a dispensary way too much since then. So, now that my wife is gonna let me grow, whats the first thing I did, buy magic beans, of course. I'm like a kid in a candy store right now. Oh boy is this great! my wife thinks I'm crazy. I ordered seeds in January. They were delivered on 1/20/26. it was like 1 degree outside. I'm standing at the window waiting for the mailman. those magic beans weren't going in my cold ass mail box, nope, mailman's hand to mine. I'm buying dirt in January. She thinks I'm nuts. I just retired this year. I'm going crazy.

Check it out, Grow bags! Sure didn't have those when I was growing 15 years ago. Nope, I just used an empty tidy cat litter bucket. LOL But hey, I can adapt and learn new ways. Back in the day when I was growing, the internet had just come out and I got lucky and found this web site way back then, I think it was called Toronto420seed bank. I looked for it and can't find it now, but anyway, it was run by this guy, I think his name was Mark, but that was where I learned to grow. Mark ran that web site and it was like this forum, there was all kinds of information there, it's where I learned to grow with promix. I joined this forum last month and this is my first post, but this forum too is just filled with so much information. I am truly thankful for THCfarmer.
Also, since I am now retired and bored out of my mind, I have spent quite a bit of time reading threads in the forums on this website and have come to realize there are a lot of members close to where I am. I almost feel right at home now and this is only my first post. There is a member, tall boys, he stated he was only a couple mile from Royal Oak, well, I'm only a couple miles from Royal Oak. My grow will be similar to his as we both live in a residential area, but i will be growing in grow bags. There is also cpurola, who is out by Milford, Beazy up Saginaw way and Gnick, Sarnia and toronto. I say hello to all.

Seeds.
As I stated earlier, first thing I did was buy seeds. Wow, what an experience. all i had to do was whip out my visa card and they were on their way to my house. How cool is this. Do you know what I use to go thru to get seeds back in the day? There was no mail order. can you say Mark Emery? I use to drive to Toronto from Detroit to get seeds. The guy I was telling you about, Mark from Toronto 420, he was a breeder. He sold seeds. I learned so much on how to grow from Mark, I felt like I owed him so I bought a lot of seeds from him. I also bought a lot of seeds from Pete's pipe shop in Windsor. I'm wondering if GNick55 knows a guy named Willy. He was big in the pot scene in Windsor back in the day. If you don't know Willy, you don't know Jack!!

Enough of the past, lets move forward. This years outdoor grow. When I grew back in the day, it was mainly regular seeds. Feminized seeds were just coming of age. So, since my space will be limited, the wife said a small grow, LOL, I am going to have a run of feminized seeds that I got from Barneys seeds, Super Boof, Gorilla Zkittle, Blue Gelato 41, Bruce Banner. So that's what I bought and that was my plan. Then I read a thread called cpurola outdoor grow 2025. I must have read that whole thread 3 times. I'm thinking is this what I have to look forward to this summer? LOL LOL LOL Anyway, she convinced me that my outdoor grow this year should also have some auto's so I reached out to Greenpoint seeds and I have some Chemdog #4 and Wedding Cake auto seeds too. I just can't wait. You know, us folks up here in Michigan have a saying, MARCH IS SPRING!!!

Outdoor is a different world where you can control very little. I've been growing outdoors since 1978. Did an indoor grow 1980ish using two 250 Watt MH's, a fan and humidifier in a sliding doubledoor closet and had to have the room window A/C running 24/7 during the summer. I could've bought a pound and saved money🤣 Been growing exclusively outside since.

An IPM, integrated pest management system to protect against aphids and spider mites, bud worms (moth larvae) and molds and mildews is essential.

I use neem oil, 90% rubbing alcohol mixed 50/50 with water (veg only), Spinosad and BT. These are all natural with a half life of 1.5 days and easy to wash off any residue. I give the plants a good spray wash day before harvest and get great smoke.

Before you start the first seed make a Grow Diary😉

Welcome to the farm and Happy Birthday from a fellow Aquarius. ( I'll be 59 on the 18th) This is definitely the best hobby ever, especially for us old retired dudes with nothing better to do. Good luck, looking forward to seeing what you grow this year.

Welcome and much congrats for retiring I'm a retired 68yr old lady grower in Oregon. Hence.....growing outdoors is in my genes LOL. Anyhoo, great story and keep us posted on your outdoor adventures this summer. There's many here who show off their outdoor grows. Happy Birthday welcome to Medicare LOL sheesh🤣🙃🙃

Glad to have ya with us. I'm a bit east of ya in Akron Ohio. Yeah we're the north Coast growers.🤣

Wanna have fun...put one in ground, instead of a pot. You can use it as a shade tree come August.😉

Thanks PlumberSoCal, I remember when I was growing indoors back in the day, I think I was in my 3rd year of growing when one day I opened the door and said Oh Shit. That was the day I learned what spider mites were and I used neem oil ever since with great results. Fast forward 15 years to today and I was talking to the guy where I bought my dirt about pest management and growing outdoors and he sold me some stuff that was a little pricey but he said this is good stuff. We will see.

Outdoor is by far a fun challenge learn your bugs and how to fight them but best pest management is by far the strain and how healthy you can keep it
weak plants equal, easy targets
I haven’t ever sprayed anything but water on mine
But I launch lady bugs all over the place
Lost a few pounds to bud rot but I take that as part of the game if you don’t spray 🫶🏻🪴

For neem I use Bonide and it has more of a tart tea smell and less of the offensive nasty garlic odor. That Azamax stuff sounds good but don't use it in flower, you run the same risk of it affecting your smell as regular neem. Spinosad can be used up to day of harvest but it's not a contact killer... it's more biological warfare. It's a bacteria that's toxic to certain bugs when eaten, with no similar effect on humans. So when I get to flower, I switch out the Neem with some Doc Bronner instead... During the winter months they get weekly treatment and during swarming months nI use the spinosad weekly and either the neem or soap mid week (2 IPM tasks per week).
