Sounds good. I suggest looking for hydrogard alternatives. May is suggest looking for products with the same active ingredients. I also used a brand with a Shark on the bottle which works well. Way better results than h202.

You can also increase the distance between pot to the water level since the roots are long. The air roots on the top don't need the splashing. The long single roots are the result of the top feed water so the plant is still adjusting to send out new roots. I would also top feed a few times more to compensate if the bottom roots decide to give trouble. Best of luck.

Thanks tons for the advice, weed4we.

I will probably end up switching to hydroguard in the next couple of weeks. If I can't find a quart bottle, I'll buy the bigger one and use the "Buy once, cry once" excuse to justify it to the girlfriend...lol. I'll definitely keep an eye on the roots over the next couple of days, and if I see any issues, I'll try doing some top watering and see if that helps. But to be honest, those side roots literally just grew out over the last 18 hours. I'll give them a few days before doing anything about it unless I see them dying off.

I think the only reason I avoided going with the hydroguard was budgetary. I'd already upgraded all the equipment in the tent, had bought all the nutes, the DWC system, and spending another $150 on hydroguard was a little hard to justify when I could run a sterile bucket for now. But, the pain of those purchases is over, and I am starting a new house on Monday so I'll have some extra "play" money in a week.

Cheers,

BA.

if you plan to go nonsterile its enouh to buy some trichoderma but i like the whole mix like great white(if you dont know what to do with your money) or some offbrand anything from amazon... i use tnc its like 5$ a bag you need a tea spoon for the whole grow.

and why are you paying for water in your nutes? why dont you like dry nutes?

I still have my nutes left over from last year's grow, so just got comfortable with them, I suppose. Also, never really thought about powder form in a DWC, but really, it won't hurt it. I'll have to look a little deeper into that tnc you mentioned and do a bit more research. I have a couple of bottles of H2O2 still and I'll use them up, but at 25ml every other day plus 30ml once a week I'll be done them in a lot less time than anticipated.

Thanks for bringing that up. It gives me something to investigate and add to my routine. The greatest thing I've found so far about this community is the willingness to share knowledge and techniques. I'm keeping a detailed notebook beside my tent, and have a page strictly for "Ideas to look into" based on suggestions I get here or see on other threads.

Thanks again for dropping in, and thanks for the info!

BA.

Good morning, fellow enthusiasts! Time for the bi-weekly update.

Today marks day 27 since emerging from the seed and exactly 3 weeks since going into the DWC bucket. Did a res change on Saturday. By Monday the numbers were so out of whack I dumped it and did a fresh batch. I've moved back to using Distilled water and it seems to have stabilized everything perfectly, so I'll stick to distilled water only from this point on. I'm going to do the res changes every 10 days unless my data tells me something is off again, but I think it's nailed down now for stability. Distilled water is only $1.25/4L and 16L leaves me about an inch below my net pot, so $5/10 days is more than doable. I spend that on coffee by noon most days!

Running an EC of 1.16 currently (ppm of 553) and my pH ranges from 5.8 when I made the solution, drifting up to 5.9 as of this morning. I'll let it rise to about 6.3 and then bring it back down to 5.8 to maximize nutrient uptake. Res temperatures are sticking right around 65.5F thanks to the Reflectix insulation I wrapped the bucket in. I did a double layer on the top (since my temps were hitting the low 70's) and it was too much. Res temps dropped to around 62-63, so I cut out triangles in the lid insulation, figuring it'd allow more heat to transfer in and I could always fill them back in if it raised it too much. It's been about 4 days now with the cut outs and as I said, it's a stable 65.5F now. Problem solved!

VPD is between 0.95 and 1.1 with a tent temp of 78F and a humidity of 71.5%. I'll start bumping it up a hair along with the EC after she's recovered from the topping this weekend. PPFD is running around 425 at canopy top and getting 335 PPFD at mid canopy. The roots have taken off!!! Getting that nice "beard" happening now, and the roots coming out the lower sides of the net pot are now sitting comfortably in the water. 4 air stones are generating a lot of aeration and small bubbles/fine mist is in abundance. The roots are very healthy, no signs of any issues at all. I'm thinking I'll stick with a sterile environment for this grow and try using something like Hydroguard next grow and clock the difference. I'm adding 16.5 ml of 3% H2O2 with the solution when mixing a new res, and adding 12.5 ml every 3 days. It seems to be working perfectly, so why fix what isn't broken, right?

Lights are at 45% sitting about 18" above the canopy and showing zero signs of light burn or stress. Nutrient mix seems perfect as the leaves are all showing very healthy colours, praying nicely and the stems are really starting to thicken up now that I've added Silica Blast to the mix.

I'm thinking I'll be doing my first topping this coming weekend. 6th node is emerging and growing in, and I'd like it to be fully developed before topping as I'd like to keep it as a clone. I have the seedling heating mat, the starter tray with the humidity down with LED lights built into the vent cap. I'll get a rockwool cube well soaked in 5.5pH distilled water prior to doing the topping and a shot glass of 5.8ph distilled water to drop the cutting into immediately. That way, I'm not stopping something half-way through to rush onto taking care of the cutting. This will be the first of 3 toppings, as I'm going to try an 8-cola manifold on this run. Should be interesting! I've been reading a ton on how to do it properly, safely, and with minimal risk of damage to the plant, so I'll stick to the method and trust the science.

Speaking of "trust the science"...

I've been keeping a written log of all data points for the last few weeks now. I check temp, humidity, VPD, PPFD, pH, PPM, EC, and water level drop in the morning with my coffee, then again when I get home from work, and finally before bed. Keeping this detailed report is letting me see trends in real time, so I can anticipate rather than react to problems. It's a bit more work, but the results are really starting to show. For a first time hydro grow, I'm honestly surprised how well it's progressing.

Anyway, enough of the novel, and on to the pictures. I've not done a root shot this time, as I'm trying to leave them alone except for res changes. When I do my next one, I'll take a shot of the roots, too. As usual, if anyone sees anything, please let me know. I'm still in the learning curve and it's quite possible I'll not see something that an experienced hydro grower glances at and says, "How the hell did you miss this?" I'm here to learn, after all.

Here's a bird's eye view so you can see the leaves properly.

Hi, Jimksi and thanks for stopping by. Fairly new to the forum, so pardon my ignorance, but what do you mean by "Subbed"? I'm a tradesman, so I immediately thought of "handed off to someone else" as in most of my work is subbed to me through a builder or contractor. I know that's totally wrong, so thought I'd ask out of curiosity.

Subbed means I do not have to look at the daily run of new posts as yours will now populate in my leads because I Subbed your thread. Kind of like subscribed to your feed. It is for things a grower finds interesting.
I failed my first dwc attempt but I have all the stuff for a jacuzzi Rdwc system. If I ever go to hydro I have already decided to have another investment in electronic pH and EC control with auto systems.

Ah, of course! "sub"scribed. Got it. Makes perfect sense now that you explain it.

Well, thanks for doing so! I'm glad you're enjoying my diary, and hopefully you'll find it chock full of information. I'm trying to keep it twice a week, and I'll detail all the parameters each time along with highlighting any changes, adaptations, work on the structure, etc. as I go along. Ultimately, I want to be able to look through this on my next run and avoid any mistakes, take advantage of any "discoveries", and in the end, have a "textbook" methodology down for hydroponic grows.

I've been looking into RDWC, and next time around, I'll either go with a 2 bucket RDWC or (if I'm feeling brave) a high pressure aeroponic system. Either way, it's going to be two plants next run. This was my "test" run to be sure I can keep it under control. Assuming it continues to go healthy and steady, I'll get more experimental next run.

Cheers,

BA.

If I ever go to hydro I have already decided to have another investment in electronic pH and EC control with auto systems.

Just wanted to add, that's my end game, right there. I'd like to get all the methods down using what limited automation I have (heater and humidifier) and add to it to completely control the environment from a single controller. But I'd love to get the automated system for pH and EC control. Obviously not for a DWC, as it would only work on one bucket. Pricey for such a small grow. But with a few more plants and running a reservoir to feed all of them, it's the ideal situation. Basically a "fill it and forget it" on auto-pilot system. In theory, you shouldn't have to do much more than pop in every couple of days for a visual once-over, and it would alert you when you need to add supplies, or a parameter is going out of the acceptable range, or whatever.

I'll have to look into the price of something like that as a potential addition for the next grow, since I'm already considering RDWC or aeroponic. Don't know how I missed that part of your post the first time, but re-read it and went "Yeah! That right there!" Figured I'd mention it. Thanks.

BA.

Hey, folks. Just a quick update.

Turns out after diving a little deeper into the app that controls my Vivosun H05 humidifier, I can create my own "recipes". So tried something with my AC Infinity T3 heater and set the trigger to 72F last night. Night time temps got down to the 68/69F ranges, a little lower than I wanted, but within a few minutes of the lights coming on it went back up to a comfortable 78.3F. Looks like the lights are bringing me to exactly where I need to be with the exhaust fan dialed in at about 33% (130 cfm fan in a 40 cf tent). So it's now set to 74F and we'll see how it does tonight. But the humidifier I had set to maintain a set level. Since the temperature is now going to be lower at night, I starting looking at ways to set a second "recipe". Turns out, the automation in the app allows me to set it so that from midnight til 6 am (night) I can have one setting and from 6 am until midnight I can run a different one. I can also have it to be triggered by a VPD limit/target instead.

So, short story even shorter, I've set it to maintain a VPD of 1.0 during the day and 0.9 during the night. I'm hoping this brings me in at around 1.0 or so daytime and 0.85-0.9 nighttime. Tomorrow I'll be able to check the logs and see what the average VPD was during the night along with average temp, and the min/max readings as well. If all goes well, I've just solved a possible speed bump in my grow set up, and made it incredibly easy for me to dial in that particular parameter at every stage of the grow moving forward! I'll let you all know how it worked out on Saturday when I do my next full update. I'll be doing my first topping at that point in the manifold training, so there's going to be a lot to report and show. Should start getting really interesting over the next several weeks!

In mid flower one plant will easy drink 2L a day why dont you buy a ro system they are like 50$ and do 190L a day or something like that

Few bucks more and you can find one with a little boiler that holds 5L premade water

Honestly, I've thought about it. My only concern is that some people have mentioned the amount of waste water. I rent the house I'm in and my landlord pays the water bill. I'd have to look into how much extra water I'd be using, what it would add to the water bill, and come to an arrangement with him. He'd be fine with it, we smoke together quite a bit, and he grows outdoor every year anyway. Just can't suddenly surprise him with an increased water bill.

How is RO water compared to distilled as far as ppm goes? I suppose a lot of that has to do with filter cleanliness, micron size etc. Definitely something I should look into in the next several weeks, before I'm doing trips to Walmart every day on the way home for another $10 in Distilled water!

Cheers,

BA.

Edit:

Okay, just checked the water rates and the reported waste to pure ratios. Best case scenario, 5:1 realistically. Worst case scenario, 20:1. At our water rates, I would be paying $1.84 CDN per cubic meter, which is 1000 L. I'm using 16L for a full res change, so even if I'm having to fill it (top ups or changes) every day at 16L, that's just under 1000L in 2 months!

1000/61 days = 16.39L/day...for $1.84. Gonna have a chat with him tomorrow! I'll buy him a coffee every other month...he'll be coming out ahead!

Nah its 3:1 you spend 3 liters and you get 1 liter.maybe olders models did 20:1 but now worst is 4:1
As for ppms i get 5ppms from 400ppm input and i had it for a year its time to change the filter but ppms are still good

And you just screw it to your kitchen sink i dont think the landlord has to allow it its removable

I'm just looking at one now. the Geekpure 4 stage with RO and DI filters. It'll give me 0ppm output and is $90. For another $45 I can get the float and controller system to shut it down once my container is full. Get a 5 gallon pail, I'm good to go. This is looking more and more like a "need to get" instead of a "maybe next grow" purchase. Thanks for pointing it out. I can plumb into the lines in my mechanical/laundry room easily enough as I've done a ton of plumbing over the years. Waste line is right there for me to tie into as well. I think I'll pick one up in a couple of weeks. I bought a few 4- packs of 4L jugs last weekend so I might as well use them up.

BA.

I'll be ordering my system end of this coming week. I've already had to warn the girlfriend, "DO NOT use this as drinking water for us or the pets! But definitely use it in the coffee maker!"

Here's to hoping she listened to me this time, as all I got was a distracted "uh-huh" while she binges out on Facebook... 😵‍💫

How much waste water is mainly determined by the water pressure. They also clean better at a certain pressure.
I got low water pressure because i live on 4th floor. Normally my can give 2:1 but i get more like 4-5:1 and ppm around 40 from 400+ppm
I don't care to much about the waste because i make max 30 liters a week. Thats 120 liter waste. I'll skip one bath = 120 liter i think

According to the specs on the unit I'm planning on purchasing, waste is 2:1 at 60 psi. We're right around 60-70 psi city water here in town. I'm planning on just filling a 5 gallon pail once or twice a weeks as my entire system takes 16L of water to fill up to 1" below the bottom of the net pot. So max waste for me should be somewhere around 20 gal. per week, or around 75L per week. Since we're paying $1.84 for 1000L, that's roughly $0.14 per week...or just over half a buck per month. Even if I only get half the efficiency it claims, that's still only a dollar a month vs. $10/month...and it also allows me to run that RO water in my humidifier instead of distilled.

Here's the exact one I'm going to order:

https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B0897G8QDV/?coliid=I1IR8NUBTZXLBT&colid=2W19GG776J859&psc=1

I'll also get this float shut off device for it:

https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B00HZ6A476/?coliid=I2JMWK3RESAFY5&colid=2W19GG776J859&psc=1

It will shut off the input once the bucket is full, so no more waste at that point. Very easy to plumb in, too!

Cheers,

BA.
