Got a few grows under my belt, all Fems or clones and the occasional hermie. This will be my first grow with reg seeds.

I'd like to save some pollen from one of the males, and use it to pollenate a bud or 2 to stock up on some seeds for the zombie apocalypse, and to save a few bucks in the end.

1 3x3 tent
1 5x5 tent
1 Garage
growing in soil, 3gallon and 5gallon pots (mostly 3g)

I popped the seeds (10 total) a few days ago and they are just putting out their first leaves. So I have a bit of time to plan it out. Here's what I'm thinking...

Once they are showing sex I will move all the females to a different tent on a different floor of the house. Keep the males pruned tiny small just to get a couple pollen sacks matured. Once matured, harvest the pollen into a glass bottle and store in the freezer.
Now, wait until the female is in the harvest window, harvest half of the plant, pollenate a single bud on one of the remaining branches and wait for the seeds to mature before harvesting the rest of the plant.

I'm sure I'm missing something here... like if the seed production takes 30 days or something my plan wouldn't really work out too well I don't think.

So what am I missing? Is this a decent plan assuming I can keep accidental pollination from happening or is there a better way to go about it?

ya you can probably do that,,..
though i just did it and i let my male well into maturity than i lowered the hours slowly over a couple weeks into flowering, i had the females downstairs on the same cycle so once the male flowers started to open you wait like 5 ish days before taking pollen,, you want to make sure to get good mature pollen, than i collected it up and went downstairs and pollinated a couple branches, you want to pollinate top bud/branches that get good light and where the female provides most of her energy, at this time of pollination there’s still 6 weeks give or take till harvest, making sure for good strong mature seeds,.
i wouldn’t trim/prune the male, his pollen is as important as your buds and seeds so treat him good just like the females,. and i know you can but id try to use the pollen fresh like within 20 mins of collecting it,. again your trying to get the best possible outcome you can,..

In my experience,
you would be better off taking clones of the females and putting them in the tent with your male plant.
If you have multiple males, you may wish to set up a breeding tent and take clones of both male and female, then flower them together.
This will allow you to first have time to isolate what phenos you wish to preserve, without the danger of polinating your whole grow.
Do as much research as possible on pollen storage. This stuff pulls water from the air, which in turn ruins the viability.
I also like to stress my females to weed out any hermies. I know this sounds like a lot... and it can be.
Have fun, take notes, and pass on any knowledge;)

That's a good idea too! So take clones, throw out the male plants, once clones root just flip to flower and let them rock?

Ok so if I use the pollen fresh it's approx 6 weeks to produce mature seeds.. but I've read that once the plant is seeded even on one branch it uses all its energy to make seeds instead of trichomes/terps. Thats the only reason I was gonna harvest half the plant first lol. Have you noticed a difference in the bud when you seed a branch? Does the rest of the plant slow down?

I usually keep up my feed schedules to notice any differences in growth of useful material. Gotta give em what they need to produce seed...and since I have harvested bud without seeds...I usually don't smoke the seeded lollipops.
