Like the title says. I have a stream of light beaming into the closet thats drying. What's the difference between light and darkness when drying?

certainly does. that said, i've stored jars and jars and don't really take the care to keep em dark. Haven't noticed a decline in potency or flavor.

The degradation is certain, i'm just not convinced it has more than a negligible effect on our flowers.

Can someone clue me in...is it that constant light hitting the buds is detrimental or is it any light that hits the buds that is detrimental?

I check my drying buds like 2-3x a day to monitor temp and humidity with a flash-light...I take a check for about 1-2 min each time. Should I just be in and out?

constant light - a small amount of light every day is not gonna be a big deal

I've always thought people were talkin' sun light messes up the buds.. I thought a tiny bit of the house light didn't really matter.. But what do I no.. I would still try 2 keep it as dark as possible 4 best results..

Direct light, extreme humid or arid conditions, hot or cold are all factors you want to stay away from when drying. (Ideal conditions: 50% humidity, 60-70 degrees, good air circulation) I suppose its not terrible to have a small light in the room that your drying in, but if your using your light to help aid the drying process by pointing them directing at your medicine... then yeah, your degrading your hard work and your missing one of the most crucial part of being a good grower.... patience...... ;-)

Somebody picks the same cut at 60 days and leaves it in the sun to dry for a day or so then into bags. The other person leaves their plant in the field under the sun for 5 more days and picks theirs at 65 days.

One person has dried nugs at day 65 and the other person has wet buds at day 65. The 65 day plant was in sunlight longer.

IMHO it is better to store in the dark for long time storage. But light isn't going to hurt very much in the short time.

^^^^ Agreed, keeping it out of the light is more important for the long term storage. Direct sunlight can degrade buds pretty rapidly though. l left a jar of Blueberry in a windowsill last year and it bleached it almost pure white. Smelled and tasted like shit after that too.

the big part that matters tho, was it as potent as some left outta sunlight

I believe it is more that the plant is not dead and giving it light will not stop the processes. I keep them in the dark the first 3 days. JK

Yeh i am on this aslwell, the green in the leafes when there is light in the first few days of drying, doesn't disgreat (that is written wrong i think). Leaving more green in your smoke, which can give that bad feeling on your stomach when smoking without eating anything before.

light degrades THC

as in, exposure to light right after a chop might allow trichs to amber up some more than straight dark, or it just straight kills the THC?

I'm trying to figure out the sweet spot on air circulation, between blowing my buds dry too quick, and not giving enough ventilation to my cupboard (I'm using my exhaust from my 8" to force air into the cracks of the cupboard).

UV light, particularly UVB, degrades THC into other cannabanoid compounds. And degrades those chemicals into even further medicinally useless forms. On the other hand it also provides a mechanism for synthesis of THC and other cannabinoids from cannabanoid precursor compounds produced in the resin of the plant. Without the aid of this process the THC content will, in theory, be lower. And is why it's believed that plants grown outdoors at higher altitudes, being exposed to higher concentrations of UV light, are more potent/higher in THC.

So the net effect of exposure to UV light should work out well as long as the plant is producing resin that can be enhanced by it in this manner. After which, such as during drying, curing, and storage, it will gradually degrade all of those chemicals into their medicinally useless forms. A little won't hurt it much, might even do it some good(depending on what you're after in terms of effects). Too much though, as always, is a never a good thing.

This is my understanding of it anyway. Correct me where I'm wrong.

To prevent mold. Mold needs light. Cut buds have a lot of moisture in them. Perfect breeding ground for mold. Why I dry on screens and cut big buds down. All it takes is once to respect that rule. Lights not going to degrade THC in 3 days.
