HEy all I was wondering if it is possible to mount my window ac unit in the wall of my flower room ? and have the exhaust end into my laundry room ? I need to lower temps so i can put in my other 1000w hps and my hps 400w to my bud room .. im trying to figure out the pros and cons , or should i just buy a protable ac ?

Your laundry room will be hot as hell with that ac exhaust pumping into it.
i dont like portables but everything has its purpose
h

You will need to exhaust your laundry room.

500+cfm (min) per ton of A/C.

portable is going to vent the smell....You can shoot the window unit into the attic if you have one ?

As was said, you'll need to vent the hot air thats going to accumulate in your laundry room. Otherwise the unit will be working against itself.
Your best solution (besides a mini split) is to build a box like dese637 did.

i just bought a portable ac , a 8000 btu unit , will this be good enought to cool 2 1000w hps lights ? i am planning on buying a mini split after this run

If your going to use a portable, make sure you have good venting and for a short distance. When we ran a portable I found that anything over 10' of exhaust killed the effectiveness of the unit.

you should get a mini split if you have to buy a new AC. Mine is quiet and very powerful for only being a 1 ton unit. (12k BTU)

Also lets you keep all your air if you happen to be running Co2

Not even close. You're gonna need one MUCH bigger.

that must be why my portable AC started sucking after I moved it to a new location. (farther from the original exhaust point)

good to know. thanks man

How many lights are in the room you are trying to cool?

In my experience, you need 2000BTU per air cooled 1000W light. roughly 4000BTU per non air cooled 1000W light.

hope this helps

I have one 1000w mh/hps and want to hook up my other one as well .. i am in the first week of bud . I just bought a portable ac , 8000 btu from futar shop for 300 bucks .. i may add another 400 w mh to it alittle further on probally for week 5 and 6 then start scaling back to the 2 1000 for week 7 and 8 .. . I also can bring in cold nitetime air from where i live as well

2k btu per 1k for air cooled lights seems low to me...

I think its cheaper to spend the extra $$ on A/C and NOT air cool the lights. By the time you factor in fans and ducting and hassle.

Yup all around:nod

The rule I follow is 4500 btu for non air cooled and 3500 for air cooled. Also depending on climate and room location the room itself will actually carry a few btus per square foot. Not to mention all your other stuff that generates heat ( co2 controller, air pumps, fans, dehumeys ect. Also mini splits are good to avoid exchanging room air but you have to mount the compressor indoors if you live in a cold climate because the lowest operating temp is around 0 degrees for the top of the line units. Also split systems cool more per btu rating. By that i mean a 12 k btu split will cool considerably better than a 12 k btu portable. Check out cannabis johns thread you will find all the info you need and then some! It is a great thread if you wanna delve into the nuances the hvac world!

You are right. 2000BTU per air cooled light may be a bit low.

Here is what I have going and its more than enough cooling power for my particular room.

I have 5 - 1000W HPS in RAPTORS, air cooled with an 8" fan and insulated ducting as well as a 600W Metal Halide in a wing. (non cooled)

1 - 12k BTU mini split

Also running co2 regulator (heat) 2 dehumidifier (heat x2) and ballasts outside my room. (potential heat)

krondikebar, the big diff between your set up and the OP's is his portable VS your mini split.
Portables are thee most inefficient type of AC, arguably a mini split is the exact opposite; it's the most efficient.
A 12k btu portable will never cool as a good as an equally sized mini split.
So that 8k btu portable is gonna have a helluva time cooling 2k lights, for sure.
A little off topic but what brand mini you running?

Its a friedrich brand mini split. It also heats as well. It was very expensive brand new im sure. I got it from a guy on craigslist for $575. It had never been used but sat outside in the california climate for about a year

Not trying to start a fight by any means, But I have a Soleus portable Ac (8000 BTU) It was able to efficiently cool 2 air cooled raptors and 1 - 1000W hps in a wing. Ran it like that for 2 cycles.

Then I up graded to this and added some more lights.

Here is a pic I took yesterday. you can see the air handler of the mini split on the right.
