Generator Question

^ not to shit on anything dave said but a propane generator is not even feasible; the energy to matter ratio of propane is extremely low AKA you'd need a shit ton of propane to even get one harvest off. Diesel generators are the way to go, you can get a 2-4 kwh module for well under 10K. Before you even start looking you need to educate yourself on the different kinds and also what phase generator system you would want 2 and 3 phase generators are much more efficient in the long run but can be much more expensive; Also if you plan opn running over 10,000 kwh on this generator then it is a wise idea to learn the ins and outs of double boilers that are used to supply power to larger scale industries. you can build a smaller double boiler system in your basement that can produce well up to 20,000 kwh's. a double boiler uses a fuel source to covert water to steam and then steam to turn a turbine which then moves an alternator. An alternator is simply a piece of conductive metal inside of a moving magnetic field as the magnetic field moves an a/c current is produced; the faster and stonger the magnetic field produced the more power you will get; double boilers are also very effiecient seeing as after the water has been boiled once that steam takes very little energy to reach it's critical temp. again hence the name double boiler. I know your probally not that mechanically savy but honestly all the so called "mechanics" i have met are completly dumb shits. If i can make one of these sytems so can you. Ok first off never buy a 3600 rpm generator it will burn up running lights.and cost a arma and a leg.you want a 1800 rpm diesel not propane and you want to size the load(watts) to 50 to 75% of what its rated for. And there are many factors are you gona run your house on it aswell or just throw a board up for the lights.remember diesel is the best and fuel isnt cheap and do you have a way to haul it?it sucks filling up cans.a generator is a big investment all around so get ready to drop some loot.good luck

No i just am looking to see what is involved with them. I will probably have it for emergency only ie. Power outages, storm shit.. blah blah. So i just need to run 2000Watts off it. like i said emergency only type a shit.

Interesting to me because we've just had our total solar array and back-up gennie system installed. And the back-up gennie of choice around here (where power is lost on a regular basis) is a propane-powered unit using a transfer switch. However, my family in Puerto Rico prefers diesel when there's a hurricane. I have a feeling it has more to do with durability, noise, and availability of fuel than anything else.

Yeah, what Ohio is saying. I wasn't suggesting propane, only mentioned it because natural gas and propane burners are interchangeable (different flow rates). I would only consider natural gas and diesel...then it just comes down to the economical stand point.

If you wanted to do a back up cheaply, I would consider something that can run at least enough to keep your light/dark cycle going. 1 flower ballast and 1 veg, etc., accordingly to grow size.

I like the boiler idea...I've been debating on some kind of alternative energy. I think I may just look into that. I may be giving you a call Ohio. Long over due anyway :D

I just dealt w/ a power outage for 24 hrs. (thankfully). It happened on Sunday night, around Midnight, and all my lights were off, w/ the veg room set to turn on @ 4:00 A.M. Needless to say, w/o a generator Monday morning, I was up shits creek as far as gettin' my veg room up on time. N.B.D., because you can always redeem a veg room, by giving them 24 hrs. of light for a period of idk, 3-5 days after, then drop it back to what you like (I normally run 18/6). But my flowering room was set to start up @ 9:00 A.M.
I found a generator on CL, an old 4K Watt Indian. Really simple, has three 110 outlets, and two old 220's. I run 2-1,000 W Digital, 1-400 W Digital, and 2- 4'x8pc. T5 units for veg. I thought it would run say at least 1,000 W and the 400 W S.H.I.D., and one of the T5's, not overly concerned about fans to start out. Just wanted to get it all up and lit before too long past regular start up time. I got it running at 10:20-10:30 A.M. Tried to run a 1K & the 4oo W Digital, and one 4'x8pc. T5. Wasn't happenin'! It did end up running my 400 Watt Digital, and one of the T5 unit's at 1/2 power, plus one small fan. Pluggin' in the fridge was pushin' it!
In the end it all worked out, but just like it was stated at the beginning of this post and throughout, you don't get watt for watt when using gas generated electricity. But having one when you need it, is priceless when it comes to saving your ladies from all the stress and a f'd up crop!! In truth, the one day it kept my ladies lit up, and the few or many more this old generator I bought have, will probably be well worth the little $200.00 as an investment.

next time grab some UA250w floruo's and plug them into 110 could easily run 8 off a gen that size and for temp use they rock
