It's already cold here in Denver. The wind is not helping much. I will be interested to see how much snow comes with this.

Nice splitter... lots of muscle.. Fun to bust up logs..Dry wood makes a huge difference, pop pop pop.
Used to drop standing dead huge elms at Lowery AFB Denver after it closed. 100s of dead elms standing. would pull up with splitter on trailer hitch, drop tree buck up split, load, 1 hour or so full cord, deliver, hit Likka Store, day done...No one ever said a word, win win, I clean up big stuff they haul off smalls...

Unimaginably cold for where I am. Couldn't live in a place that got hit by Arctic winds, I'm a lover of the heat.

I'll be interested to see what muir/the ned folks get and if the mountain towns will see the amounts they are forecasting.
Doesn't look like an upslope....so Denver will probably be on the lower end of the totals. As usually happens...one or the other will get hit hard....but probably not both. That shit can be crazy sometimes. I can remember blue skies on the West side of the tunnel and popping out into a blizzard with feet of snow on the other side....or better yet...the days when it dumped in the mountains and they closed to road from Denver. Talk about pow-pow....

either way...the state needs a good snow year to ensure that the drought doesn't return for awhile and there is plenty of water for the cannabis crop. :D

local folk are saying 1-3'.

I haven't been paying attention to any thing but hearsay on this storm. I do notice it is coming up from the east. and as to upslopes, we all remember the early 90's when we got 7-9' in an upslope. This large rain event we had, an upslope. This is why my mother and my wife are on my to back up the power.

Snowing...4 inches Around 25 or so. out before sun up for snow removal. I drag around a hand cart upside down and it clears a path. Chickens don't like to go out in snow so daddy must clear for them....

I use a 5 ton electric log sitter made by DR. I've had it for 14 years and it still kicks ass. New they are about 350 bucks and mine can split just abut anything with knots or spirals. I thought it would be a wimpy piece of crap but the little thing is a workhorse. Ryobi makes a nice one too.

Gas log splitters? lots of maintainence, noisey and lots of stuff to go wrong. But I tend to like the Powerhouse dual action one for 750 beans (from NorthernTool).

I'll keep using my electric one until she poops out. It's quiet and powerful and trust me I put it to the test. I bet I have split over a thousand cords with it and just this week I have been splitting 2-3 cords per day. I built a wooden stand for mine and a large log work tray which makes it easier to use. Iit's mounted on wheels and easy to move as it weighs about 100 ponds soaking wet. Just plug it in and go, takes me a bit over an hour to split a full cord (pretty much the same time as a gas splitter). For home use, the DR electric is great. I never planned on using it at a commercial level but it keeps chugging along.

Free timber? Black Forest area ..but you have to haul it. I have a permit to get timber from the National Forests, really cheap and lots of good dead-standing aspen and pine. I cut them down, buck them into 6-8 foot lengths, load them on the truck and haul them home to buck in smaller lengths and then split em. Lucky for me I am close to the stuff. It is very hard work but I enjoy it. I got a waiting list for orders. Business is damn good this time of year.

Generators? I had a million of them, all junk. Finally invested in the best one and the most quiet one, a Honda EU. Yamaha makes a very good one as well but Honda is the King of Gennies. Generac's are one of the worst brands on the market. Complete trash, IMO.

To each their own.

We went with the Suzuki engine after talking to a guys dad who has been working on small engines for over 50 years who said they were mega-reliable and start well in cold temps.. Decent warranty all around.....and if it breaks I'll take it and have it fixed like anything else. Such is life.

Not as worried about repairs on the log splitter as I am about repairs on a UTV. Again though...it is what it is. (a piece of machinery that breaks)

I understand the difference between backup power generation and alternative energy, but the conversation about generators made me perk up my ears a bit.

I've been doing some research on fuel cells, and these seem to be a good long term option for cold weather climates; feed it natural gas or propane, and it creates both electricity and heat. Like anything else, it will need fuel so you'll still need a propane tank, but this way if the power gets cut off, you're not shivering in the dark.

We're hopin "wood" will keep us from shivering....and I'd like to set up a few solar panels to generate some 12V power for lights should the "power" crap out (unlikely because it is all underground, but it could happen I suppose...especially with the "revolution" coming:rolleyes:). Really thinking about those wood-fired boilers and doing a radiant system inside and out. Heated sidewalks would be damn nice on a day like today....

Took me about 25-30 minutes to get from Colorado mills mall to Downtown. If you go slow, and steady it's not bad with 4 wheel drive. It is kind of fucking cold though. :)

I guess we're due, it being December and all...

Still, unless I'm going skiing, I'm not thrilled to see powder.

First leg of it didn't stick, small and round settled on the ground. Newer stuff is sticking a little. Really hard to tell on depth because of early wind and snow type. Some areas, two feet, others 8".

She came in all wet n wild, I think the mercury broke 10 today.
