An Ashville, Ohio, man shot and killed himself after a two-hour standoff at a property where he was growing marijuana Tuesday evening. Timothy Sturgis, 42, becomes the 32nd person to die in US domestic drug law enforcement operations so far this year.

According to the Columbus Dispatch, citing police sources, local authorities were working with the state Bureau of Criminal Investigation's Marijuana Eradication and Clandestine Lab unit when a state helicopter spotted pot plants growing on Sturgis's property just outside Ashville.

Three detectives from the Pickaway County Sheriff's Office and the US 23 Major Crimes Task Force approached the property on foot when a spotter saw a man in dark clothing run into the woods. As the detectives drew nearer, they said Sturgis popped out of the wood, pointed an AK-47 rifle at his head, and said he was going to kill himself.

It didn't happen right away. Police said Sturgis called a friend, who in turn called Sturgis's parents, and the parents worked with law enforcement to try to achieve a peaceful end to the standoff. But at 8:17pm, detectives and deputies reported hearing a single shot. They then found Sturgis's body.

Police found seven pot plants growing in a field, 18 more growing in a basement, as well as bags and bottles of processed marijuana. They also found a variety of firearms. All 10 weapons found were found propped near windows in the house on the property, except for the one found beside Sturgis's body.

Unfortunately I can relate to what this farmer was thinking.Ohio is not an MMJ friendly state and being a middle aged man knowing the consequences for growing was going to be prison time he elected to not go through the mayhem which would have most assuredly ensued by the bust. It's very sad and I'm sure his family will be devastated but I do understand the train off the tracks logic.
I would not do well in prison myself as I would not be a part of a gang, not bow down to the evils that be and would more than likely get shanked as I tend to stand up for the underdog.
Would I have done the same?I can't honestly say but I do understand that line of thought.Very sad...

You got it @jumpincactus

Nothing at all wrong with having guns and knives and pepper spray and stun guns and tasers etc... near every possible entry to your home. Aside from that, they didn't even know until after their trespass that he was positioning his weapons like that or they would have gone in with SWAT.

He was bothering no one. Simply trying to live his life from what I gather.

I am seriously bummed that it is still treated that way there...over a few plants, they messed with a persons life...and ended it. it is crazy.

I hope an attorney helps the family and sues the shit out of the LEO's that were on scene as well as the ones who gave the ok.

Amen to that.

Cause truth be known LEO is no longer about crime prevention.... Not sure they ever were. But my point is nowadays all they seem to do now is show up to clean up the mess after the crimes have happened. Now its all about drug busts while the chomos and rapists, thugs, and cartels and the real threats to society run rampant.

I need to smoke a bowl before I go off on a tangent..... LOL

Curious to know if he was a repeat offender... felon in possession of firearms and in the prescense of growing MJ would be much more serious than the growing charges alone for a man with a clean record. If the latter be the case, it'd be a damn shame if the dude blew his brains out over a couple years in the joint.

I'm thinking he either had been in some trouble in the past or had some serious underlying psychological issues... or both.

At any rate, very sad story.

I just find it hard to believe that a helicopter spotted 7 plants and called in detectives. Some asshole called the cops and ratted this dude out. Cops are looking for big outdoor grows from helicopters. Anyway, that is besides the sad point of the story. I agree with myco that this poor guy must have had some mental deficiencies. He probably had a long criminal record to worry about jail time over do few plants.
Very sad
