Seen some pretty awesome set ups with panda film as well, not nearly as overboard as building at a huge room that is more of a permanent type set up. Might be some potential to look into there as Junk is going to do with the visqueen.

I have seen similar material at local hardware stores pretty cheap.

Any links on a how to video of how to set up a styrofoam room?
Would you just hang the lights from the ceiling and have just 4 foam walls caulked in?
We framed the room, then added the insulation between the studs. On top of that we laid down some black plastic because I went with thinner sheets and they didn't block the light fully.

@3N1GM4 If you've ever done drywall, this stuff is a walk in the park. There's a few guys here that use it, let me see if I can dig up a thread that has it.

I would frame out the grow area as if building an additional room minus doing it to code specifically, meaning this. (locally) Code dictates exterior walls must be framed out with 2x6 at 16" on center. Interior walls framed out with 2x4 at 18" on center if a load bearing wall and 24" on center if not load bearing.

So for a grow room I would probably frame out at 24" on center with 2x4 for the walls and 2x6 for the rafters. Then I would run conduit, setting up plugs for lights, fans, (de)humidifers, ac, etc. Then just skin the walls as if you were hanging drywall, tape the seams with aluminum ducting tape and hang everything as normal. This way you can actually build out a room within a room and not fall into that category of growers that screws up rentals. If you do it right, when you tear down you'll leave no trace you were ever there and no need to paint or clean excessively as everything would have been contained in the build out.

I'd like to see pics as well.

Still trying to find the grow. I saw it just a month or two ago, don't remember who did it though.

Do you remember if it was on here?

I know you weren't directing the drywall comment at me, it was towards the thread in general. But I just wanted to say, that I've done enough drywall in my day to despise it. Much respect to those people who do it every day, it's a hard, back breaking, living.

The only thing I can think of, that I could possibly dislike more than drywall, is roofing. I've done enough of that to also know that I hate it.

But drywall is the pretty clear front runner. At least on a roof you aren't lugging heavy stuff around tight corners. I'll take the pitched roof & 80 lb bundles of shingles up a ladder much more happily (in my day, that's how we did it) than lugging drywall sheets through a framed house. Drywall is the WORST!

Hahaha, that right there is why we get along. Roofing and skinning houses were my bread and butter for a while. Throw a couple of 80 lb. bundles on my shoulder let me haul them up the ladder. Lay down a square in about 7 minutes depending how warm it is. But that foam insulation board is a walk in the park compared to drywall. No dust, easier to cut, so much less of a headache as a whole. The grow I saw use it is definitely on here. I'm not on any other canna forums currently, so I know for a fact it was here. A well known farmer none the less. When I find it again (and I will, I crawl around this site like a rat does NYC sewers) I'll post up the link.

I will go to the hardware store and get some for my next room. It would be ideal for deviding one room into two for veg and flower. No wood or nails needed, enough duct tape will hold it to the carpet and the ceiling, cover the window with a piece of it. Line the rest of the carpet with thick painters tarp and double sided tape that to carpet. Only thing I haven't worked out yet is how to make light leak proof doors. I know they make those magnetic mosquito net doors that automatically close when you go through them. Maybe you could make one of those light proof with a few modifications. Would have to have a stand or be able to hang light from the ceiling somehow with no frame tho.

Yeah, that's pretty much the only option is to set up a curtain/door of sorts to seal the room. That's even more complicated if the door opens inwards to the room.

Some thick landscaping cloth may work, never tested its light blocking ability.

We used black plastic to block light getting through the foam. I may have pix of my room somewhere... Yup. Here we go. There's not a whole lot to see, though. Just a room with four walls, and Styrofoam sheets instead of drywall.

those foam sheets are also rather flammable and provide a fair amount of fuel for a fire and a boatload of toxic by-products. sorry.

Any cheap easy to handle environmentally friendly alternatives that you know of?

@tobh made a good suggestion to frame out on 24's and then insulate / plastic. If I'm going to build out a temp room I'll flat stud the interior walls on 24's and then cut sheets of 1.5" r-tech foam board and place between the studs.. I panda plastic both sides and staple off.. If I want to use existing walls in a house or cover windows and keep the walls semi protected with minimal cleanup at the end.. I will sheet with r-tech foam and sandwhich the foam with 7/16 plywood and just put a couple screws into each sheet making sure they hit the studs. Then I'll staple panda over the plywood and it gives me a good surface area to mount all my goodies. I usually will always have one section in any given room that is sheeted with plywood to mount majority of the accessories. And then the fans and other items that have to be placed around the room I can take the time to find and mount to the studs. Since I've been using Gavitas I've noticed a lot less stuff has to be screwed to the walls ;) But then you gotta have that ceiling height.
