When I start a new grow, I plant directly into a 5 or 6 gallon bucket full of Promix. Prior to planting, I soak the Promix a few times the day before planting. This allows the water to spread out evenly and gets the buffering going. After planting, I don't usually water for a few weeks as the roots fill out. I have a small reserve of nutes that I add to the Promix to feed everyone until the plants are a lot bigger.
Planting directly is just the way that I have done things for decades, and for me, it is much easier than repotting a few times. It works well for me but might not be the best option for newer growers. The water in the buckets is plenty for seedlings or clones, and the Promix doesn't get waterlogged despite holding a considerable amount of water. As long as the roots get O2, they usually thrive.
You're an experienced grower and understand your soil conditions. I've been growing for years as well but I've always transplanted up. Never knew any other way until I come here and see these big pots and tiny plants. I get the ease part but with GH recommending 20% runoff How do you saturate the soil get your 20% with pots that large. Too much humidity, too much waste & un-nessasary space taken up imo
If you're growing monster I get it but most of the guys here seem flip at 6 weeks and that much soil isn't needed.

I'm confused time for another bowl or 3. 😀

I usually grow bigger plants than your std grower and simply take the hose to them, stopping the flow when I start to get bubbles coming out the drain holes. At that point, it will drain out for a little while. I don't feed too often, maybe every 12-15 days once they get bigger. This keeps the salt level down. With a big pot, there is a lot of reserve nutrients and it can provide a more stable level of nutrients without a chance of nutrient burn or lockout. My plants often grow over a around 7 ft tall, sbig bucket so the higher amount of growing medium can benefit their appetites.
I agree about using a 5 gallon bucket and only letting it vegg for 4-6 weeks... it's a waste and not needed, IMO. I still grow the way I was initially shown, long before LEDS and Scrog became household names. I'm a creature of habit and haven't changed much over the decades. The other big difference is the amount of nutrients used on these small plants. Different times, different methods. As long as things turn out well, then there is no wrong way.

That's the whole point I was trying to make...7ft tall well heck ya bigger pots 5-7gal If I lived in the right places in California 500gallon wouldn't be too big. 5-10 gallon for 6 - 8 week old plants?
