I usually grow bigger plants than your std grower and simply take the hose to them, stopping the flow when I start to get bubbles coming out the drain holes. At that point, it will drain out for a little while. I don't feed too often, maybe every 12-15 days once they get bigger. This keeps the salt level down. With a big pot, there is a lot of reserve nutrients and it can provide a more stable level of nutrients without a chance of nutrient burn or lockout. My plants often grow over a around 7 ft tall, sbig bucket so the higher amount of growing medium can benefit their appetites.
I agree about using a 5 gallon bucket and only letting it vegg for 4-6 weeks... it's a waste and not needed, IMO. I still grow the way I was initially shown, long before LEDS and Scrog became household names. I'm a creature of habit and haven't changed much over the decades. The other big difference is the amount of nutrients used on these small plants. Different times, different methods. As long as things turn out well, then there is no wrong way.
