The advantage is that toy spend 1 time and reap the rewards. I spent 3k on my 4x4..... fully environmentally controlled.... pulled 2 - 2.5 lb grows and in 1 grow paid for itself. Yupnit costs money to start out and do thing right but it isn't more than a grow or 2 to make it back. My first grow in that 4x4 paid for itself and then some

+1

Not trying to outright say blow money.

I'm ~$1700 into my setup at this point, excluding genetics. I intend on spending another another $400 - $600 to build the UC system, and at some point probably another $500 alone for a chiller. However, I'm looking at these initial costs as a two part benefit.

1. My current run will recoup all previous costs and possibly cover the next round of costs, including electricity and water.
2. Most components will be re-usable when I am finally able to build the room of my dreams in my shed.

Initial expenses may seem like expenditures of diminishing returns, but when done right, and the money spent on the right gear with the right plans, the ROI is equal if not more than initial cost.

I’m probably 3k in and have a shit setup that needs to be redone. I’ve bought almost everything twice and have a second tent and set of lights collecting dust. Just frustrating to spend thousands and years learning when there’s AAAA for $100 everywhere lately and $800 a lb.

But. There comes a point where the spending stops or slows down and the bud just keeps rolling in I guess.

How does raising the water in the res change my bucket levels with my setup?

I’m thinking of just keeping it the same and making the drain on the bucket higher. Simple fix.
Not really, you will more likely end up with a turnover of the top bit of solution and end up with a stagnant zone in the bottom. In turn, the temps, EC and pH readings you get from the res may not reflect what is actually in your buckets if you are not getting turnover of all the nutes in your system.

If only I wasn’t so strapped for cash. With local AAAA going for $100cad an oz it’s hard to even justify growing and spending hundreds every week lately.

You must have access to some kick-ass AAAA then as i've seen damn little (if any) commercial weed that's as good as what a decent home grower can do. With the right strain/pheno and a bit of skill you should be able to blow the doors off anything sold legitimately. Think properly dried and cold-cured bud so foggin' sticky it's difficult to roll a joint, or, that makes you have to clean an SLX grinder with everclear.

To qualify, i'm basing my statements on what i've personally seen available commercially in Canada. Is it just me or does it look like much of what's for sale has been tumbled prior to sale?

Beyond that, there's the satisfaction of knowing YOU produced what you're consuming. Almost anyone can grow bud, not so many can grow something you'd like to smoke day in - day out.

Not even legal weed. I can get mk ultra, pre 99 kush, gg4, and all sorts of nice bud online for $400 a qp. Or less. Those MOM sites are hard to compete with.

The legal weed is pretty bunk though yeah. But my homegrown is nothing special either and gonna take years.

just makes me wonder how much money and time I really wanna invest in this. Kinda frustrating.

Start small work up to where you want.... usually my grows fund my next project or equipment upgrade. If the hydro is pita and costs to much then just put it to the side. I do have a full 4 site system if you were closer I would just give yo you minus the pump. Honestly as a former hydro guy I'm really liking the ease of coco but again the way I do it would require yet more equipment so probably not something ya wanna look at. If you want some help on system design for hydro just ask away.

See that’s interesting. You’re the second guy to go from hydro to coco so that also makes me wonder

everyone is getting out of hydro and into coco. I’m the only getting into hydro it seems, whereas everyone else is sick of it and going to something better.

Just sucks constantly spending and having nothing coming in I guess!

I can tell you that coco is not as fast as my hydro.... the growth in hydro can be absolutely absurd which can bring its own issues and when shit goes wrong it goes wrong fast. But when it goes right.....

Here is 2 weeks growth from my last hydro run. Dec 18 2019 to jan.2 2020

Yeah that’s insane. I have my soil plants from early December that are half that size

that’s my next problem. 4 plants in a 4x4 tent is gonna be crowdeddddd

I’m considering getting rid of the 3 struggling ones and keeping that one thriving one in the 4x4. Have it be a 1 plant tent.

the other 3 are so far behind it’ll screw everything else up.

Yeah have to do what you have to do... it can be a real pita when plants are of different sizes and growth rates. 4 plants in a 4x4 is a good option IMO. Just need to flip them at the right time.

Yeah I’m gonna have to flip early.

I’d love to get into an 8x8 room

But then I’d need 3 more lights. And everything else. And that’s another $2-4000 for everything. First world problems eh

until then. I’ll just keep dreaming and living vicariously through you guys haha.

Do a few 4x4 and then upgrade as you get some return on investment

That’s what I’ve been doing.

Grow 1 in the 3x3 was about $1500 but brought back around $600 bucks

grow 2 got another $1000 or so and brought back $1000 bucks in my 4x4.

grow 3 now I’m in to it about $800-1000 more with this hydro stuff and big bottles of GH and hoping to bring in $1500 or so. Would like to get both tents and all 3 lights running soon here

After using all the liquid gold up.... switch to a dry fert and the cost of what you paid for all those bottles will give you enough ferts for years

Au contraire; starting to setup my dream RDWC room this year. Time will tell if i'm off to a good start or not. I started growing about 18 years ago so it's been a bit to get here.

I get as much or more out of the cultivation as i do out of consumption and i don't need to turn a profit although breaking even eventually would be nice. I've had my share of disappointments, but they're overshadowed, far and away, by the good.
