Need opinions, should I get a split or window unit? My biggest worry is smell. I just want to quadruple check..window units do not pull the air (and smell) from your room and exhaust it outside right?

Which one will cool better (assuming they are both the same btu's) I live in a hot climate.

THANKS!!

Given they are the same BTU's, they will both get as cold. BTU's is a measure of heat or heat dissapation. If an a/c cools 24k btu, then it cools 24k btu's.. Make sence? Now the type of refridgerant could make a difference, but would still be rated to the amount of heat btu's it can eliminate. I hope that makes sense.

Neither will make the outside smell. On the window a/c there is a fresh air vent, and you close that. The air that is in the room with the a/c is taken into the a/c and cooled, and expelled, so it is generally a closeded system.

Generally a mini split will be more efficient but more expensive. If your going big, get a d/c inverter high effiency mini split. will cost about 1500-2500 got a good 24k btu inverter mini split. Then there is install, some of which requires special tools and pumps. So a window a/c is the cheap easy way to go, but not as good and efficient.

Thanks Lost. I'm glad to have your input. I was torn. i was really worried about smell too. I would love to get a split but the one I can afford right now is probably poor quality and will be a waste if it stops working in the near future, It's made by air-con, i think. 24000btu for $900.

I think I'll just go to Home Depot and get a window unit. I wonder if I'm doing something wrong though. I have a 9x4 growlab, soo hard to cool it with one 1k light, forget about 2!!!! Right now i have a 13000 btu portable. I'm thinking of saying screw the tent and do the whole room with a window or split (It's 11x9) and I'll have 2 1k lights air cooled with a 500 cfm fan and scrubber on the other end. ?? Still worried about smell though through the house if I get rid of the tent, UGH!!!!!
Thanks,
Nay

lost- ive never noticed an increase in humidity but i always run a large amount of vertically hung bare bulbs. in fact i use a commercial humidifier to keep rh were i want it.

heres a link guys:http://www.heatexchanger.ca/

they also sell the water cooled ac as well as the york split ac which imo is the best split system you can buy.

T.O. - Thx for the link!

I have never seen a heat exchanger like that!

Why do you like the water cooled over an air cooled model mini split?

Im assumimg that these systems drain to waste? Not doable here In Cali, lol :(

First off that Link you referenced Is actually Ok, from asking around in the field and a thread on here you can see its really not a bad product!
Here is a link to a thread I started a couple months back about the size of A/c and Ac systems you should check it out:

I ended up just sucking it up and going with the fujitsu but seroiusly for one run a 1k ac will pay for itself.
And yes DITCH that tent and that portable a/c and youll see youll be able to put 3 1k's in there no problem even with a home depot 12k window unit. Those portables SUCK ASS and are hurting you more than benefiting you.

The split system on that link is Extremly ineffiecient. It runs on 10 SEER.. THats Horrible.. Much better units to be found..

lost- doesnt have to be dtw you can recycle off a well or pool everybody in cali has a pool right lol. just a joke when i moved to the valley it seems every place i rented had a pool. anyway i like the Water-cooled heat exchangers better because of the low price and the fact that they draw very little power.

water cooled 2 ton= 4,2 amps
mini split 2 ton= 25.8

thats a lot of lights i cant run because of the ac

registrd- thats cool for a small unit but what if you need a 5 ton how many fujitsu compressors you going to have running outside your place.

Im going to pick up a 18,000 btu 18 seer model later this year. It pulls 6 amps max load and the inverter will do 23,300 btu's!! And you get a 30% tax credit!!

lost-thats not so bad then your unit looks good. for me though im not paying for water so i want something that will draw the lowest amps and theres no extra ac compressors sitting outside the house.

I could run 2 and it would be a 6 ton! and still running less power than that thing you referenced!:cool0044:

a Mini split system is the BEST way to go! Yes u can run them in CAli LOL. There practically silent compared to a normal unit as well. so need to worry about your neighbors hearing it! I have several rooms where they drain right into a 55gal drum and they give me pure water every 4/5 days.. no need for a RO unit!
