The problem with politics and government is about MONEY and nothing else. Money makes the world go around and in politics even moreso. The division is coming from the same powers that are controlling government now. Once you've established "sides" you can exploit each side by manufacturing disinformation and outright lies. We're going to need some massive external threat for this divided world to come together... like alien invasion or something... aside from that, we'll probably just keep squabbling amongst ourselves until we cause the fall of civilization or the death of the planet... whichever comes first... or as a fun third option, AI takes over and we live in a matrix like dystopian nightmare to serve our AI overloards. Either way, we've got good weed to watch the show unfold lol.
One of the reasons nothing gets done is because 3/4 of the time in office its about fundraising and campaigning for the next election. If you pay attention most legislation is just a bandaid to the immediate problem but not a real solution. None of these MFer's actually craft legislation. Their staffers are the ones that do all the groundwork. They're just the pretty faced blowhard that puts it into action. Any real solution in government needs to be systemic and not addressing a flare up but they're too busy raising funds for the next election. Presidential elections used to be funded by the US Government and the only other money allowed to be used for this purpose was through small dollar donations along with corp caps. Once SCOTUS passed Citizens United vs FEC and McCutcheon vs. FEC the floodgates of money from private corps and mega donors came roaring onto the scene. Not that it wasn't before but not in the amounts and doing so was risky, i.e. Jack Abramoff.
This now enables mega donors and big corps to control legislation that moves through congress. If they don't like a law that may affect their bottom line guess who gets a call with veiled threats of pulling campaign funding?
IMO, they need to outlaw PAC's and return to the previous model shutting out big money influence. Shit like ALEC also needs to be removed.
Gerrymandering on both sides. Why do lines need to be drawn by the state legislature? That's like letting the fox guard the hen house. Lay a grid across the state and let candidates running for that district win on their merits and accomplishments rather than the influence of the state Party bosses. Gerrymandering is a nice way of saying rigging the election. You want to return integrity to the vote? Outlaw gerrrymandering.
