I get as close to the node as I can - you won’t ever get the entire stub off, but the more you leave the more you’ll be having to pluck regrowth from the cut, at least in my experience. You may have a different experience as me (I haven’t had any plants split by topping too close to the node, but others may have dealt with that).

There’s also many ways to top / grow weed, so people tend to give advice with what worked for them. Just gotta use your best judgment. If you’re growing a photo, and you mess up somewhere, you have time to fix mistakes, so don’t be afraid to make them yourself by trying things. (This is for pre-flower, once you’re flowering, try to not mess with them as much as possible).

As for how much to leave - it’s not really possible to say because each plant will have different spacing between nodes, so some plants may not even have a half inch between them, for example.

As for a stub it is what it is 🤣 I don't top with anything but my fingers and I fold the top over until it snaps off. If that makes sense 🤔 I have seen stems split but I think it had more to do with training and nutrition.

like i said earlier, i've been told leave at least 1/4 inch and also being told leave nothing.
i'm still a real newb at this and just want to learn from the people that know

Top early and often for outdoor plants 🤔 and if you don't have training clips get some they are awesome for spreading it out.

Most of the time I top once then LST. Leave as much of a stub as you can. As the plant gets larger it puts a lot of stress on the stub and it can split. As the plant gets larger so does the stub. Late in the season I often put a pipe clamp on the stub to help with the load.

In my head there shouldn't be a stub because it creates a stress riser where it will split. Maybe I am wrong but I have never had a plant split at that point. I have had whole branches snap off in a thunderstorm.. do you guys have pictures 📸

This is my Green Thai plant last year. It was topped once then low stress trained. Everything comes off the 2 main branches. It began to split and got the pipe clamp treatment or it would have split right open. The little stub was 1 1/2" across at the time. Little indoor plants may not split but outdoor plants like this will and do if you don't help the plant.

Late in the season when the plant is holding up bud stalks like this it needs all the help you can give it.
This was Buba Kush. Same topped once and low stress trained. This plant split right down the middle but survived.

I agree that an indoor plant likely won’t split, especially if you’re scrogging, but an outdoor plant gets much larger than indoors (typically), so I can def see it splitting in that regard.

I actually have had limbs on scrog that split. I brush the split with honey, push it back together with vetrap, and ninety five percent of the time they heal. I top twice and fim prior to having gone to scrog. I have some heavy tops.

I personally top around week 3 (21 days)...and flip them soon after. I don't go by number of nodes but I top when the side shoots are already growing and visible..not just poking out,but already growing.

This lessens the time it takes to recover, as there is enough vegetation left on the plants.

The problem with counting nodes is you're literally cutting off a week's growth, or more, if it's a slow vegging cultivar. If there are side shoots..top at the newest growth. A little tip I do is tape the leaves to the side of the cups, to further open and allow light to the new shoots.
