Is there a formula for pot size and how much to water? I know there are a lot of variables, but a 3 week old plant should get how much water, and how often? It’s in a 1 gallon pot. Just trying to figure out what to do. I’ve already screwed up and overwatered 4 others that are really stunted.
I'm brand new at growing, but seem to have a handle on watering thus far. I've researched a ton before starting.
From germination. I soak my seeds in a jar of RO(reverse osmosis) water for 24 hrs. Then I put them in a very wet, but not dripping wet paper towel folded 3 or 4 times. And into a ziplock bag. I set the ziplock bag on a seedling heat mat set to 78°f. And cover it to create darkness.
When the seeds pop and taproots emerge, I start my plants in a 2 gallon fabric pot. I loosely fill the 2 gallon pots with FF
happy frog soil about 1" from full. Then I water each pot with 1000ml or 1 Liter of RO water. If you're using tap water. I would adjust the ph to 5.8.
Then I set the previous watered pots in my tent for a few hours to let the soil and pots gets warm. (Because i grow in my basement where it's 60°).
Once the pots are warmed up a little. I carefully dig a hole about 1/4"- 3/8" deep with the back side of tweezers. I carefully pick up the seeds with the tweezers and set them gently into the hole then lightly cover the seeds.. just enough to ensure the light won't directly dry them out.
After another 24 hrs. I will visually monitor the moisture levels on the surface and give it a very light mist with a pump sprayer to endure the taproot and seed doesn't dry up.
The first watering I do is when I stick my pinky finger in about 1/2" and don't feel any moisture. I am doing about 250-300 ml when they are seedlings. The first time I planted i didn't properly pre water my pots so I hit em with 500ml to ammend the moisture down deeper.
-I don't like the idea of transplanting multiple times because the risk of shocking or stunting the plant becomes high.
-the amount of soil you've got in the solo cups looks insufficient to me.
- the plants roots will be trying to grow as deep under ground as the plant is tall. (Just picture the plant upside down under the soil and the root structure will look something like that)
-if you're using
fox farm soil or most other pre-ammended soil, which it looks to be because of the wood chips I see. You have enough nutrients for 30 days in there. Just try not to drown them.
I read something the other day someone here wrote that said "let the soil dry up, I like to let my roots search for the water". It won't hurt anything to encourage more root growth.. is what I got out of that and it helped me relax a bit when it came to worrying about watering.
I'm brand new. Hopefully I didn't offend you with my insight. Feel free to checkout my journal to see what I've got going on. Hope it helps man. Happy growing
