Hi,
Any idea why all my clones always do this? Leaves in the middle of the cutting go really skinny and curl inwards. Out larger leaves are OK, it's just the ones in the middle. They're in clonex root gel.in jiffy plugs, about 10 days since cut. Sprayed them every other day or so with water and some clonex mist. Under 100w led light set to 20% and raised approx 24"

Usually folks will strip the stem and just leave a couple fans at the top, which have the fingers half cut off. Without roots, what exists of the plant cannot sustain whole fan leaves.

If you are successfully propagating doing it the way your doing, I say stay with what works and just pinch off the ugly leaves when it becomes viable. Alternatively, you can try it the recommended way and see if your rooted babies come out better looking.

Oof, just realized I misunderstood where you said the issue was. Indirect light and CFL work really well for clones BTW.

Ok so that's good, rule that out.

Next guess would be the light is too strong.

Raise it another 12 to 18 inches at least. I propagate clones under a 10w led desk lamp. The most basic, ambient light is enough imo.

#same but with a 9w and the clone box is in front of a window for a state of constant twilight.

Thanks for replies. Are the bigger fan leaves causing them to absorb more light then they can handle then? I'll trim them all off and see how it goes.

I don't cut off the tips of the large fan leaves and haven't had the problem you have. The lower leaves just tend to turn yellow, die and fall off.

The Clonex Mist is a dedicated foliar spray to help rooting, it's not same at the rooting gel, although Im not sure if there's any common ingredients.

No other chemicals, no.

They were doing this in the propagator and now doing same thing now they're in 0.5gal pots (Coco perlite mix).

I've turned light right down, no effect. Adjusted humidity up & down, no effect.

Do you spray or feed your clones at all and what do you feed once you pot them up?

All I ever do is I make my cuts I stick them in the box. I walk the hell away man as long as you your Aeroponic is working just fine. Your pump is good. You haven’t burned it up by accident. You didn’t put too much rooting hormone in the water, etc. I literally don’t use anything except for just tapwater and my cutting root every single time imagine that there was scuttle butt in a growers community where people had ulterior motives of selling you more useless shit.🤣👊🏻🤡
In my opinion for amateur growers, fuller sprays, and hell even for pros fuller sprays. In my opinion are useless.

This. Historically I've used 100% vermiculite, make the cut, stick it in, then proper conditions.

I thought my temps and humidity were ok though? 23-24⁰c, 90-95%?

I do believe the clonex mist and other products are a bit snake oil though, I hadn't planned to buy more.

25-26°C would be a sweet spot. Your humidity seems a tad bit high. I shoot for 75%, 80% tops and keep the vermiculite moist, not soaked.

Temperature controlled heat mats are really nice for this and seed germination!

You're temp and humidity were in range. The problem is with the light. You can't really push photosynthesis or transpiration at all when rooting. The light has to be just enough for the most basic energy needs of the cuts, no more.

Rooting clones in just water
Rooting clones in just water 3

These were extra cuttings that didn't make it into the cloner. I put the jar just like that, in the tent in the shade under the mother. After a week they hadn't wilted so I just left them there. A week later...presto! Must be magic idk.

It's funny, it always has been that simple, just like with many other plants. Easy to overthink and overdo the process, and it just isn't as necessary we maybe make it out to be. It's also pretty much free. 👍🏻
