I still consider myself a noob to all of this but 10-15 ml Cal/mag sounds really high. The directions for Botanicares Cal/Mag say 5ml per gal. Same thing with GO's CaMg+. It sounds to me as though you have WAY too much CalMag in that mix.

I feel ya, the cal/mag i use recommends 5-10ml and I've always heard coco soaks up the mag so I thought i should use a bit more since i was not using coco specific nutes. Anyway they are looking much better so... who knows what the hell it was.

Thanks for the thought .

Actually...coco binds up calcium, not mag. If there isn't enough calcium though...the mag gets locked out.

I use 20ml /gal of cal/mag for the charging of new coco...and then 3 - 5 ml/gal during growth.

Wow... 20 ml/gal of CalMag is an extremely high PPM... :thinking What brand of coco are you using? Do you flush first with RO? I've had no problems with B'cuzz coco and no flush using 5 ml/gal of CalMag...

I've never actualy heard that, but you know if your on the corner long enough someone will tell you anything.

I could be on the wrong track with the 10ml and I've dialed it back a bit since and it must have been something else because they started looking better before i did that.

Thanks for all the advice anyway every little bit helps

I've been following this thread for awhile and thought I'd chime in. I'm making the transition from a light 2:1 soil/perlite mix-> coir. Gold Label came highly recommended from a fellow grower that I respect but despite emailing the mnfr and w. coast distr, I've had a hell of a time tracking down a source that's within reasonable driving range so am putting off using GL and 100% coir/perlite for the time being.

I'm using Nutrapeat, a peat/coir based substrate that Sun-Land Garden contract packages for Orchard Supply (OSH) Roots Organics.

Substrate- Spaghum peat moss, coir, kelp meal
Nutes- 9-3-4 derived from feather meal, steamed bone meal, potassium sulfate, gypsum(^ pH)
Mycorrhizal count (10 diff fungi listed) - 2000/cc
Bacterial count (12 diff Bacillus, etc)- 32000/cc

It's not the straight-up coir that I'm aiming for but it is convenient to pick up and @ $7.99- $8.99 1.5 cu ft, the price is right.

Thanks for all of the good info folks.

i suppose rinsing coco for plants that will be in one gal or less would be ok ,if the strain is sensitive,,,not neccesay with botanicares coco imo

as far as charging the coco..done it both ways dont see a diffrnce,,the bricks are nice if you only got one plant or two

good nute regime and let it flow

This has been my experience for the past 2+ years UNCLEJOE. I top feed/recirculate using Botanicare 5Kg Coco Blocks, and Canna Coco Nutes 2part.

The majority of my grows have been between 4 and 6k grows with excellent success for the most part.

After trying Canna's Coco Coir for the first time, presently, it has been nothin less than a nitemare! The stuff is like mud compared to Botanicare Compressed blocks. Its strongly ph buffered at 5.5 that requires contsant ph up to stabilize throughout.

I find it very odd that their is so much praise for Canna Coco Coir? Are these peeps first time growers, or perhaps closet growers?

You can dial in any media, if thats your objective, but why struggle when its uneccessary?

Excellent post thanks for sharing your results.

Top 3 I have used are canna, sunshine "just coir" and root organics coir mix. Best price is the sunshine just coir. I like to mix root organics coco mix with canna or just coir.
1 part roots to 2 parts straight coco is what I have been using lately.

Dries out faster than the 100% coco, until the root mass sucks it dry daily :)

Hmmmm I used The bricks for over a year and then switched to the Loose bags of Botanicare. Not bad coir after you flush about 5 gal of water through it. Mind testing it with a meter after you soak it and see what it throws out? Pics dont lie man. I get about .1 to zero ph drift with Canna. First time growers thats funny.

I recently found this coco coir at home depot. Cheap stuff 7 bucks for 5kgs of compressed, which supposedly are equal in volume to 3 cubic feet of peat moss when rehydrated.

My RO water used to hydrate it was aprox 70ppm (older RO filters) and after soaking for 2 hours I measured the EC of the slop and it comes out at .2 EC

I am guessing that I do not have to flush this to the same extent as some, but I will still flush it all the same.
Hope this helps in someone quest for cheap coir.

Oh and its pretty fine so definitely mix it with some chunky stuff.

I am using Canna Coco this run and its cake and my plants are huge!!!! I am not sure what is so hard about using Canna. I want to try others maybe organic but so far its been as easy as soil. IMO. But then again It is my first Coco Grow...

So is all this neccesary? I just set up so coco plannin on doing a drip set up in 2 gal on trays. Plants are perfect. Using bcuzz, nvr flushed or charged...I mean Ive used sunshin 4 for years and almost every bag the run off is different. Just goes with the territory.
