Did you take the clone yourself, and did it take? I have a red variety, no interest in disguising my cannabis, but the house needs more landscaping. If I can make my one maple go that much further, good on me.

I have a red variety as well. Big ass bush. Must be 10 plus years old. You can clone them the same way as cannabis. Actually have a buddy that's mom roots them in just a cup of water. She can make gold grow on shit and has the greenest thumb iv ever seen. Moral of the story, iv rooted cuts of them....they do veg slow as a fuck but that may just be my variety. I'll snap a picture and post it in a bit ~Smf~

I had an 8 footer in my front yard a few years ago, was about dead when I bought it got it for a steal. Nursed it back to health, then one winter we got 16" of wet heavy snow. I looked out my front window and something didn't look right, the japanese maple was gone. The snow pressed it to the ground and that was it for that tree. That tree never came back, but I will be taking some clones now. Thanks for that information vaporedout and SMF, and I hope all is well with you and yours

That's my own mom, grandmother and one of my sisters.

I'm going to pick out some branches to take, then. Any restrictions on time of year to take, anything good to know like that?

Cool!

Yeah, me gusta mi nueva Hello Kitty dia de los muertes. I found it on eBay, for mah pre-rolls! Sold as an iPod holder (and it does hold my mp3 player and phones, but that's not what I got it for). My g-daughter is into Hello Kitty and I was looking for cigarette cases and saw that and said, "Oh! That's mine."

I guess I just have to decide which way I want to prune my tree, then go from there. Good to know!

I am hardly an expert, but here goes. Sharp pair of shears, you don't want to tear, you want a nice clean cut. I try to remove crossing branches only, as well as those that will end up growing in a direction I don't want. Simple as that. Never from the top, either, I've always read that if you top certain trees you'll kill 'em for sure.

I do not have a Japanese Maple per se, but I do have a "flowering Maple". Not related at all to the Acer Palmatum family (J.Maple) instead she is an Arbutilon Hybrid a.k.a "Chinese lantern" "flowering Maple" I have a cultivar commonly known as "tiger eye"! I love this plant and if you treat her well she will reward with gorgeous blooms all year round!

Oh ya...did I mention I absolutely love J. Maples?! I work with them quite often and when planted and pruned properly can create a lovely focal point for any landscape for years to come!

Thanks Vapo! Attracts hummingbirds like its going out of style! All day long!
Bees's? the occasional yes...just an FYI bee's are more attracted to white, yellow, purple and blue flowers, think of any Lavender, Rosemary, Texas privet etc...and those always have bee's pollinating them. Hummers are more attracted to red, yellow, orange, purple and blues. Neither one is extremely partial to the colors, just the they prefer said colors.

I agree That are really cool lookin flowers! :)

Thanks CGK! Makes a great potted plant as well, I have mine in a 15gl SmartPot!

Bless...Sol

I had a small collection of named maples, I was going to start a nursery growing them, But they have to be grafted, cuttings wont take well at all and if you get them to root wont do well. It was just to hot to graft and raise them where i live, Its easyer to just by small ones on ebay for $10-15 . There is hundreds of different named maples, much like cannabis.

maples are starting to bloom and look good. my first cloned maple is getting big. i found a few maples i liked last year at customers houses, and took a lil clipping from a few. i got 2/4 to root. one customer said i can just grow from seed, and gave me a bunch of seeds from a cool butterfly maple she had.

my first clone (it was in the pic above, in a different pot)

then the others from last year
