    making shatter that actually SHATTERS

Shatter is most definitely NOT all carboxylic acid! The THC-a is a pure carboxylic acid, but THC is an alcohol. What we know colloquially as "Shatter" is a combination of solids (THC/CBD and their cannabinoid cousins) PLUS terpenes, which are OILS at room temperature. Soft, flowing oils... Add...

When to harvest for ideal extract...

I could see a benefit to using some pelletized dry ice, (added with the water ice), as it would keep the solution colder, BUT solid CO2 will sink in water, likely entrapping trichomes down on the filter bag surface as water freezes to the super cold CO2 pellets. If I'm able to experiment with...

Way too much t41/charcoal. Your product ended up adsorbed...try about 10% w/w of filtering substrates.

When to harvest for ideal extract...

A freeze dryer is required for best results. This will remove 100% of the water, while preserving the oils. Without a freeze dryer, you can still do well, but should dry the buds to less than 5%. (As dry as possible.) It may seem counter-intuitive to thoroughly dry material that you will be...

When to harvest for ideal extract...

Greetings friends! So we know about two wonderful pathways to clean, stable, high-potency extractions: organic solvent based methods, and water/ice based methods. Whichever methodology you prefer (and ultimately use), it remains true that the quality of the starting material directly...

I'm looking for a way that I can completely seal my room??????

Lumber, Panda paper/heavy plastic sheeting, silicone caulking, and proper design will seal up the room nicely. Thick but soft weather stripping will seal the door, but staple through it for a long lasting hold. 18k BTU of cooling would be sufficient to cool roughly 4kW of open, unventillated...

Ethyl Acetate vs Ethanol and ISO for extraction

Regarding the use of a solvent on wet material- It depends on the miscibility of your chosen solvent with water, but in any case, water will end up in the extraction if it is not frozen, and the ice crystals subsequently filtered out. And the waxes and lipids are also located on the epidermis of...

    Rosin bag issue

Acetone is king when removing cannabis extractions, just be sure to test some on the bubble bag first, as some plastics are destroyed by it.

What's better, resin or rosin? And what the hell is the difference?

I completely agree, and I also believe that the entourage effect is altered. It may be anecdotal, but my personal experience has been that rosins pressed from water-hash feel more gentle, when "partoken", than the exact same strains extracted with solvents. I'm fairly certain that the extra...

What's better, resin or rosin? And what the hell is the difference?

Regarding "live" products, those are plants that are flash frozen immediately after harvest, and then taken to extraction to preserve most of the terpenes.

What's better, resin or rosin? And what the hell is the difference?

"Rosin" is the result from pressing bubble hash on a heated press...the glands rupture, and their contents are collected after pressing. "Resins", though, are generally the products obtained after solvent extraction. They contain plant gums and lipids, and so lend a softer consistency.

What's better, resin or rosin? And what the hell is the difference?

Same here brother! My first attempt at a marijuana concentration was as a teenager in 1997... using acetone and a pipe column to wash some buds... I hadn't studied chemistry much yet, but I knew that bud resin was sticky and that acetone was great a removing sticky stuff. Fast forward 20 years...

What's better, resin or rosin? And what the hell is the difference?

I like this post, thanks! I would address the point of separating the terpenes from a pharmacological vantage; there are medicinal benefits to the terpenes too, and as such, they warrant individual study after isolation. The entourage effect is undeniable, I am very interested in deliberate...

    Extraction advice from a chemist

Amen!! The passing of amendment 64 in Colorado was monumental (along with Washington) to get recreational marijuana realized...now, 6 years on, it's a brave new world, and I am happy to be in it. :) To the future!

    Extraction advice from a chemist

I am less concerned with the BP of the solvent per se, than I am with the soak times... I'd use ethane for extractions, but it boils at -89°C(-128°F), which would require substantial heating to efficiently recover the gas. I prefer to use a blended gas: 70% propane, 30% isobutane, as the final...

What's better, resin or rosin? And what the hell is the difference?

Evening everyone! Hopefully y'all are all staying dabbed up & happy! But before I go too heavy, let's clear up some items first... What are trichomes? (not trichromes interweb...) - They are the hairlike, glandular structures protruding from the epidermis of a plant. They contain the...
