    I think i have it solved. pretty sure the damage if from invasive japanese beetles. I cought one in the act and saw another appear soon after. I dont know how i wasnt able to see any of them the previous days but im pretty confident they are the culprit

    thats what im assuming as there is literally no other sign of damage or dung. no slime trails or webbing. and the damage is exclusive to the top 3 inches of the plant.     so you've seen your culprit? what do they look like? I haven't been able to pinpoint a particular insect being the problem as I've observed no particular increase in insect life and for the life of me, havent been able to catch one in the act despite the damage occuring rapidly right under my nose
