1 dollar Grow bag.....Maybe?

Im a friggin cheap bastard..and a poor one...

But I need to step up my game,
and have been wanting to try fabric grow bags....
yesterday I broke down and got Five of these 5 gal ones on ebay for 27 bucks!!

Then today, I saw these shopping bags at the dollar store.....lol
I filled it up and Put Bubba Gold #7 in it. :)
bout a 4 gal bag.

BTW...B.G.#7 just showed her female preflowers today :)

Anyway...After I put her in the bag I was pretty happy with myself and planed to go back and Buy a grip of em...

Then I saw this..

It felt like fabric.....Now I'm not so sure....

Im guessing it will work as well as plastic ...but it aint no Smart bag is it?

what do you guys think? :dull

i go to downtown LA in the fashion district and get me a yard of PET felt fabric 100% recycled in WHITE

for $5.75

then i get my mommy to sew me custom sizes

Thanks Dat...My mommy has a sewwing machine too and I was thinking they couldn't be too hard to make...I don't live near the garment district ...

Give it a try!! Im even cheaper then that, I get free 5 gallon gray buckets from a painter.

Think about evaporative loss in addition to drainage. With smartpots/bags there seems to be a little variance in evoporation based on the different fabrics used. Not so much about one style being better, but more about your personal preference, so long as they air prune the roots. I have a bunch of different brands and thicknesses, and even use some with the top half folded over to double up the wall thickness to evaporate slower (moms).

FYI, I saw some new ones the other day in a shop with one velcro seam down the side, probably making it a lot easier to repot/reuse. Think I'd back it up with a snap at the top though, and be sure not to overfill to where it swells too much?

I think these are gonna work..I think they will air-prune the roots...
But

They are thin though and I don't want the roots to get cold in the GH. :dull

Or hot in the summer....Maybe I'll stick to plastic...lol

Those handles are HUGE....I had great success with cloth bags but I didn't have handles and paid the price in bending all the way to the floor to pick them up.

Watch out for signs of off-gassing from the plastic. I have never used them but seeings how they are made in china I myself would be very concerned about what they used in making the bags. This also goes for landscape fabric if you make your own pots. Some of the people I grow for are very susceptible to chemical reactions. Good Luck

Nice! Can't believe I hadn't thought of that.
I wouldnt worry about the off gassing. These materials are everywhere. we are exposed to them breathing the air in our homes and cars and at the office. Not trying to dismiss that these substances are harmful, these certainly are. We exchange air out of our rooms so fast i doubt one would show detectable levels is all.

A little chilly in paradise this week, eh? Seems like a lot of us enjoy re-using items on hand rather than buying new. I often let my room design elements evolve and flow this way. The challenge to engineer without consuming is very satisfying, and I think the plants really appreciate it too. (translation: I'm a cheap bastard too)
