That's really cool, appreciate you sharing this story. That's what a lot of people have done in the past 20 years or so. They've hunted landraces but have still come up short. I think she is right in hunting landraces though. Mazar x Columbian, then selfed, then crossed with Acapulco Gold is the recipe for the original skunk.it wasnt mine, the seed for those were grown by a coimmercial friend of mine in kansas city. she had the afghani land race from seedsman too, so she hit a female fire hair with the afghani land race pollen.
those brick beans made tall skinny plants that didnt branch out a whole lot, one long main cola covered in red firey hairs that only pulled in and swelled if pollenated, made HUGE beans when it did though.
As far as i understand it, the endlessly drifting hybrid phenos this created WAS the first true skunk lmao. You pick your lady and run from clones. Or you breed with it lol. Im not pontificating here though, im totally open to better information then my own lol. Her logic, was that the best way to find those original skunks, was to recreate the original F1 and hunt the phenos herself plant by plant. Couldnt tell ya how it went though, i have since lost contact info and she doesnt seem to be on social media by her real name.
The further from inbreeding you get, imho, the skunkier the plants get.
No need to be sorry. There's a lot of us who love the Skunk discussion. All the old threads from Sam Skunkman & Madjag are super informative and it's the real history. Plus I love hearing everybody's personal stories of their encounters with the skunk. It really brings us back to the roots of this whole cannabis movement.Im sorry, the skunk discussion is one of my favorites now a days.
you betchur britches if i get some kind of true "omgwtf" caliber skunk plant, that clone is going to stick around for a very long time. And it will be given to anyone who wants it for free lmao. So will any seed i make from it. Pollen too etc, should i be able to create some worth preserving.
My peaceblasters in veg out there already smell from a bout 10 feet away, in veg, like a skunk the next road over got a dog or something lmao. Musty raunchiness. Its the best kinda stink there is. If i brush a stem or the leaf margins the smell is on my skin for a bit. It gets on my clothes lmao. My other plants smell good so far. But mostly just like vegging cannabis plants. But thats not i lineage i ever expected to skunk out. It just kinda did at the most recent generation in smell taste and appearance all tbh. I dont consider it a skunk. Personally, but it kinda sorta is for some reason or another. But i did cross a multi generational F1 plant with the columbian land race. I can def see how i landed at skunky plants. And it does have the afghani land race a couple gens back too actually.
I really do think that the further you get away from generational inbreeding with a diverse genetic background, the skunkier the plants get. At one end of the cannabis genetic spectrum you have homogenous land races, and at the other, you have skunks.... or something like that
See, i was informed at some point/under the impression the first skunks were afghani land race pollen hitting the mexican fire hair sativa landrace, and those late 70s kings of the grow game were mostly created by interbreeding the results of that cross. That's really cool, appreciate you sharing this story. True MAZAR, is a Land Based Original, and has 0 Skunk 1 in it. Mazar, comes from Mazar i Shariff, in Afghanistan. Nevil, went personally to Afghanistan, during the war, and brought the seeds back. Its true though, many crossed Sk1, into Mazar.isnt mazar itself a skunk cross though?
Edit: yea, Mazar is skunk #1 x afghani according to googling anyway, prob some modern recreation but idk. I rarely research this kind of thing online because of the conflicting information, i roll with the information and experience of growers ive met in person mainly when it comes to oldschool growing information.
I genuinely dont know if i know what im talking about or not here, essentially. All i know is personally, my peaceblaster lineage gives me the closest plants to those descriptions of the old skunks ive personally grown to date. Even more so then seeds that were supposed to be the very plants. But i wasnt around smoking back then either, and im sure someone who is familiar and was actually smoking a lot of the stuff back then, could tell me exactly where these plants aren't like those old skunks on first smell, feel, and toke.
I will also add. This strain was HEAVILY SATIVA DOMINANT, and would get huge outside, if given the chance. It was also fairly late in our region. Late October.True MAZAR, is a Land Based Original, and has 0 Skunk 1 in it. Mazar, comes from Mazar i Shariff, in Afghanistan. Nevil, went personally to Afghanistan, during the war, and brought the seeds back. Its true though, many crossed Sk1, into Mazar.
Also. We grew the Skunk from 1978-1984, until my buddy got ratted out, and the cops got it.
The Skunk, came from a very well known breeder, in Meigs County Ohio. Keith William AKA "NOODLES" Hays.
He passed in 2020, at St Mary's Med Center, in Huntington, Wv.
He was the Originator, of Meigs county Gold, and Willie Nelson, was a frequent visitor, in the 70s-80s.
I didnt know Noodles, but my buddy did, and met him at a James Gang concert, in Charleston Wv. My buddies band, was an opening act, for James Gang.
Noodles gave my buddy the first Indica, we ever heard of, in 1973.
Noodles said, the SKUNK he had, was a cross of Kerela, and an unnamed Indica. And my buddy was adamant, that Noodles, told him, it had Kerala in it.
Noodles would be almost 80 years old, and started collecting seeds, in the 60s.
Meigs, in the 70s-80s, was known as the Humboldt County, of the East.
Noodles Son, is a member of RIU, but never comes there. He registered one time, to set some facts straight., about his dad, and his weed.
Noodles got ratted out, in the mid/late 90s, and went to Federal Prison, for 8 years. I also find it curious, that SKUNK, for all intents, and purposes, started to dry up, in the mid/late 90s, and it happened, at the same time, NOODLES, got popped.

I'm sure a lot of the Mazar strains now are some form of hybrid. Sam Skunkman said that the original roadkill smelling skunk #1 was the same parents as the sweeter skunk#1.isnt mazar itself a skunk cross though?

We got our Skunk, here in East, Ky, in 1978. I started smoking weed, in 1967, and have seen a lot of locally grown weed from here in Ky, Ohio, West Virginia. Not so much anymore. But early on, from the late 60s-until I got ratted out, in 97. And a buddy, that had the original skunk, still grew, up until 2 years ago, until he passed. He was the one that knew Noodles, who gave him the Skunk, and Afghani. Afghani in 1972-73.I'm sure a lot of the Mazar strains now are some form of hybrid. Sam Skunkman said that the original roadkill smelling skunk #1 was the same parents as the sweeter skunk#1.
That lineage was Afghani (Mazar) x Colombian, then selfed, then crossed to Acapulco Gold. So his version of Mazar he used was before skunk1 and most likely landrace genetics.
So I'm pretty sure I've read some of your posts on here and other forums. Thank you for sharing your story. Most of this was before my time (was born early 80s), but I was pretty much born into the scene, and have come to really appreciate the early years and all of the stories from the people who were the driving force in this whole culture. We got our Skunk, here in East, Ky, in 1978. I( started buying seeds, as soon as they became available, from the ad in the back of High Times. I ordered the original Mazar, ( 1984 ) as well as a couple others, and the Post Stamp, actually came from. SANTA BARBARA. CALIFORNIA. Not Europe. The money did go to Europe. Seeds, were in the USA. It was some really good weed. But was lost.
Also saw a good deal of Vietnamese, in 71-72, when some of my sisters older friends, came back from Nam, and brought it back. Along with Opium. My older sisters boyfriend, used to get me stoned, when I was 8 years old, in summer of 67, soon to be 9 in November 67. Also turned me on to Hendrix. I started playing guitar, when I was 5, and when I was 8, Id get stoned, and he would show me stuff, on the guitar. Blues. How to tune. Notes on the fretboard. I still play.
I got 12 years on a mandatory minimum-5 million dollar fine x 10-Life in 97, for 1200 clones. Partner I gave 500 clones to, to put on his 2000 acre cattle farm, in Lincoln County Ky-150 miles away, got busted, and ratted me out. He got off, scott free. He was 70, I was 39. He was a friends uncle. I did 8 years locked up, and 5 years supervised release. No Parole, in the feds.
Noodles, that personally bred the Skunk, we had, from 78-84, says his was a Kerela x some Unnamed Afghani. He was also the originator, of Meigs County Gold.
Still to this day. The Afghan Noodles gave my buddy. Is the best Indica, Ive smoked. And it must have been some kind of nonhybridized strain, as every plant was like a clone of the other, and it never did degrade, in the 11-12 years, he grew it. Not counting how long Noodles had it.
i know this is an older post, but do you know much about Crippy?@Seazofcheese420
Hey brotha, you have a great grow going here, how did you get so many old strains. I just got my hands on a pack of 1974 Jew Gold myself.
I need to know, what is the 81' Florida strain you mentioned above... is that the original Crippy?
No, my buddy, was a musician, and former bandmate of Ralph Morman, who sang on Joe Perry's 1st solo album, after he left Arrowsmith.Your buddy didn’t happen to work for an elevator company did he ?? I met an older than me guy that use to come to a popular salmon fishing river here in MI that we hung out with every year since maybe 2009 and he had the legit skunk every time we met up. He was from “ just south of peducah ?? ) and come to find out he grew it along the river here in MI would prep his planting holes with salmon carcasses every fall and return every spring to plant while steelhead fishing. Last we talked a couple years ago he was gonna give me clones cuz he didn’t want this strain to die !! Was the last I heard from him ! Great Ol’ boy we used to call him grampa at fish camp
Ive got a couple packs of landrace Kerala/Chellacutti, but havent grown them.So I'm pretty sure I've read some of your posts on here and other forums. Thank you for sharing your story. Most of this was before my time (was born early 80s), but I was pretty much born into the scene, and have come to really appreciate the early years and all of the stories from the people who were the driving force in this whole culture.
Damn they really railroaded you over those clones. You got caught up in the bullshit drug war like so many people and it's complete garbage how everybody is profiting on weed in the legal market now, off the backs of people like you. Some of them are the same people responsible for writing the laws and locking everybody up.
What I love about most of the stories I hear is the overall not giving a fuck attitude and the absolute brass balls that many of you had. Without guys like you, I'd never have even known about skunk bud.
There's no doubt that Noodles was responsible for a big part of the Skunk in the Midwest and it seems like his is another Skunk variety that is pretty well known, as told by a bunch of people. I've also heard it called Meigs County Skunk. Meigs County Gold is another legendary strain. His skunk and the skunk 1 RKS were both sativa dominant, and both came about around the same time in the mid-late 70s. Crazy to think that was 50 years ago.
I'm wondering if the Afghani is the key to the skunk. That was my thoughts a few weeks ago. Sam Skunkman says it wasn't the Afghani that had the skunk smell, but that seems to be a connecting point in both his Skunk & the Meigs County Skunk. Sounds like that line was a landrace that was inbred and stabilized.
I appreciate you passing the knowledge of Kerala x Afghani. I actually have a good lead on some landrace Kerala seeds and I just picked up a huge variety of Afghani seeds from all different regions.
Sorry to hear about your friend passing, sounds like you guys have a long history with this plant. Hopefully it brings you some peace knowing that he had the skunk all the way through, and that's longer than anybody else I've heard of. You guys are some legends.
Jeez man, that's f*cking steep. If there's one thing im thankful for, it's the modern legal climate shift on cannabis penalties, though, regardless of the hypocrisy involves. I've wanted to come back home to southern Appalachia to grow my entire adult life.We got our Skunk, here in East, Ky, in 1978. Another buddys brother, is Russell Kunkle. He is a drummer. His younger brother Moe, and I got busted, for weed, when I was 12, and he was 14. On the Ohio River bank.Ok I figured it was a looooong shot but I’m just a lil’ buzzed right now and was hoping beyond hope to make a connection to my Ol’ buddy Eric from salmon camp !! Appreciate ya even answering !! And that’s cool a hell your buddy played with those cats
Can u show that post of LD and I didn’t see him say RKS but rather 79 skunk which is why I came here.
Fuk I hated undone threads right from the start. Didn’t expect this bs in 24’
I got back from usmc in 82’ hooked up with a legit queen pin who I Danced with in our club.
Fast forward = no I didn’t ask for any of their stuff as I was still weed.
Fast forward her dad sold weed. Yes, skunkfrom west Va. I bought it for 135/zip. It was delicious and sold at 12/g.
Found bag seed and the one they flourished was exact duplicate to the HT cover photo. Folks thought I was lying and it really was my plant. Nobody could tell the difference. 400 hps start to finish. That light ballast was stolen. It would run cool enough to keep ur palm on the ballast. That’s okay there circle️ spot was canceled and to the Fringe they are
Dude just called it skunkand it would stink up the place. Yet, it was. It road kill skunk period
