is this a good idea for a 4'x8'x7' tent? if seems it could free up some floor space and open the upper area up for fans angled down vs stuff on precious floor space. less 'crap' above the canopy to block airflow also.

No i would run horiz
verts work better around plants, not above them and u dont have the space to go around
plus keeping it kewl will be harder since u wouldnt be ducting the verts.
2 600s horiz would work well, 1000s not needed since ur takin off a foot for reflectors, so ur limited height dont need the larger lamps
