Views of the Weed Patch. It looks like I'm working on defining a plant community versus an unkept garden. I'm starting to enjoy keeping a green mulch as much as possible. I think plants thrive better in community than solo. Her canopy is starting to fill in. She spreads to 6x6 and is just short of 6' tall.

The tomatoes cantaloupe and watermelon will fill in for a groundcover. I've given the melons a couple of tomato cages to grow vertical and hopefully avoid the weeds. The shade fabric helps keep blackwalnut debris off the plants. View attachment 2687437
Blueberry muffin.
That bamboo is definately the better option compared to scrog net wi 4 hooks in corner, feel like I got a kids wendy house 5x5 vivo is a toy compared to " the woods" lol..

Yes those of us in a certain life stage are not really wanting anything over 7’ and perhaps we need too create a list of what actually was smaller.
I spend a lot of time looking into that but find very few breeders offering more than short, medium & tall with no additional info. I currently have medium plants @ 7 feet tall and not slowing, still have a few weeks until they stretch & I am seeing myself on a ladder with rebar stakes beneath - not a good vision at all.
That's why I train rather than top my plants. Once they get at least 2' tall i spread them, and spread them. If you're not squeamish about breaking and bending stems you probably even write your name with enough patience. My point being, this is a very elastic, plastic plant. The shortie strains always left me wanting more. That said, Rainbow Rocket and Grape Dragon from 7 East max out at 5 feet. Sunset Sherbert from ILGM is a little taller and more productive. Blue Sunset Sherb from Barney's farm is also a shorty.

Thursday update, just sprayed them with kelp and fish hydrolysate, critical orange punch is a little messed up. Get it to flower, see what happens. When I was spraying a trap went off and caught a vole, bonus.

Working big is lots of fun. I'm very impatient. Scrog nets work great, but I don't enjoy untangling buds from string. The tinker-toy approach is a lot of fun and open ended. I cut more bamboo yesterday so the girls support grows along with them. I'm limited by the number of plants I can grow legally so this is my maxing the garden.

Regarding shade and growing under shade. In the early 70s, when house plants were becoming fashionable, we would fly down to Orlando, pick up a Uhaul and drive to Apopka and a couple other nursery venues of that time to fill that truck with tropical house plants. We up-potted them to grow out for the Richmond market. My point is that ALL of those tropicals were grown under shade of some sort. The growers figured out that they performed better with a little less light, but lower leaf temps. I could see this being relatable to desert growing as well.

Maybe! But sometimes shading just isn’t practical! Have to make do without it! I’ve never had any luck with it! But there’s a lot of ways to skin a cat!😍👍

Agreed but I have gone to growing in beds / hedging them so I count on size at maturity for my planting layout and wide spreads are hard to do because I jam them in.

Cut more bamboo last night and added a layer to each girl. 20260723 092758

I started out with a California Sour Diesel, but she didn't like her soil. I suspect it was too hot.

My melon arch got spider mites which spread to my everything.
I’ve been spraying with a mix of dawn and neem oil in my pump sprayer and may have made it worse?
