You should see when they swarm by the thousands. You have to get indoors, they'll just fall outta the sky and cover everything. The sound is deafening.
I was working in Northern VA when the 17 year batch emerged. Yeah they would pop out of the ground all creamy white larvae nightmare fish bait. Tree trunks would have swarms of them clinging so they could dry out and molt into the big loud bugs. There were drifts of their shells like piles of leaves in the fall. In some places it was hard to drive without hitting or running over them.
