What does everyone think of the 36 hour darkness thing when flipping to flower? I've read most places that it helps trigger the onset of flower but doesn't actually shorten flower time very much, and if you're shortening it you're just sacrificing quality for speed. Anyone share or oppose this view?

I've not tried it but when you are talking about 60 - 75 days of flower time, 2 days of dark at the beginning sounds insignificant to me. I doubt it would hurt it but I don't think it will help in the long run.imho

Yeah that's the side I came down on. It's my first grow so I'm not taking any chances. I don't really get why you'd want to rush to bring in flowering anyway. Open to other views or any research. Everything I've found so far is just whatever people reckon

I don't think speeding things up hurts quality one bit- as long as the buds are ripe. I've done experiments with clones where I raised the N levels and flowered under 13.5hrs light. The result was bigger buds that took longer to ripen. Potency and taste was identical.

I have never tried it, because I've never heard of any benefit. I assume people who do it believe it causes the plants to flip faster, but I haven't seen anyone test the idea, side-by-side. I've always considered it suspect bro science.
