Hi there gang its jeff again ive just bought 20 5 gallon fabric pots. Will these be good enough for autoflowers as i had bought 28 10 litre plastic pots and from seed 5 weeks in there showing roots at the base of pots is that normal and will the 5 gallons suffice for the autos to grow well in an 80/20 coco coir pearlite mix 80 being coco. I was never a fan of these as when watering you have no saucers but ive that extra foil sheet you put in grow tent at base. I just need to put black bags down outside on carpet when i have to raise light. Im getting temp reading with 1 small fan on just now as the heat from light is really warm and im only at 50% power whis is 360watts from wall some plants are looking a bit pale id say im un sure if its heat or 50%humidity or to much water or not enough nutes each water. My ph meter comes 2morrow and ph down phospharic acid 30% so i hope its just that as i thought 10 litre pots were a good size for autos. It says u shouldnt top autos but i did one as an experiment. Any advice much appreciated thanks team

Cloth pots are awesome, the soil can breathe a little air in from all sides which is a good thing. They're better as a "final pot" you move into because roots can grow into the sides and make transplanting problematic. But the side aeration makes the roots shy away from the edges which mitigate that problem to a degree. You'll want to keep them seated on a raised grate or on top of a couple bricks so that you have bottom aeration too. About the only thing I don't like about them is the unsightly hard water stains on the lower half of the bags after they've been used a couple times. 🤣

5 gallon will work fine for autos and you can get plastic saucers in almost any size cheap online

Here's the caveat, I would say only top an auto if you get a 5th node growing in under 20 days from pop. Only top your super fast growing autos, LST the rest. You're racing the clock and you don't want to lose any time in the penalty box.

Can you tell me please what lst means bruv

A 5th node is that a set of leaves or bulbs on branches sorry i havent learnt all yet

Okay thanks for helping where we're at in throwing slang out. As the plant grows, each set of leaves that come out represent a node, starting with the single one after the cotyledons. The cotyledons are the first little round things that came out of the seed, and don't count. Once topped, each spot where a leaf is growing from the stem represents a potential branch site that will grow off the plant. Some genetics won't branch, they'll just grow a Y where you topped.

LST - abbreviation for low stress training. Topping is high stress training. Bending the main branch down instead and holding it down in place is an example of LST. When you do it, it forces the plant to redirect energy concentrated at the top to other viable spots along the stem where it can absorb the best light, so it encourages those nodes to all grow up as vertical branches together. Two different approaches, top or bend to Kickstart that side growth if it's there to be had.

I like the 5 gallon size because then I can use 5 gallon plastic buckets to mix my soil.

U se pearlitie then i will be using 80/20 coco/pearlitie in this fabric pot using only autos. Im going to start with seedling trays with high domes first then repot even though they hate the stress autos. Im supposed to soak full pot with water/nutes before repotting yes, ive got peat plugs do u like using them then just sprinkle half seed size in coir then give a spray with water is that a good way as last germination time i tried cococoir 100% but only used water but ten seeds failed out of 20 some i tried before paper towel but i think i should have used a nutes mix rather than just water but peat plugs have nutes dont they so better to use? Im going to buy 320mm saucers for my 5 gallon fabric pots their 300mm diameter i hope they fit. Its to save mess in tent even though i have extra liner in the grow tent.
