Opened my tent this morning and saw this guy flying around. AI identified it as a crane fly. The adults are harmless and don't even have mouth parts but they lay eggs in moist soil and the larvae eat roots. So basically they act like large fungus gnats. They are attracted to bright light so i guess they love grow tents. The good news is bti is effective against them so everyone in that tent is getting a dose just in case. Wish I had gotten a better Pic but as soon as I found out what it was it was violently executed. Been growing for around 5 years and have never seen one of these inside so hopefully this guy just got lost.

Some call them Mosquito Hawks but they don't prey on Mosquito's so I'm not sure why that started. I caught one once that was so large I had to send it to Texas A&M Entomology to confirm it was a Crane Fly. My understanding was their larvae ate decaying material not live roots so that's something I haven't heard before.

Looks like a fruit fly to me. Crane flies look like a Sikorsky S-64 Sky Crane helicopter. This is the time of year they're just starting to swarm over Southern California suburban lawns. Whether fruit fly or crane fly, neither is going to bother your weed. Crane flies are mostly unsightly because they cling to your walls or the corners of your ceilings, and every once in a while they'll buzz around the room looking like a B-52.
