Was gonna question that aswell :D
Sometimes those things are transmitted to their Servers first and then rerouted to your Account, enabling you to Controll them on vacation etc. but if theres no way grab those data directly from your Wifi aswell as preventing that from happen, that seems like a hughe flaw as we can see in this case.

Best of luck getting that Controller back running, though if thats truly an issue with AC i would surely write some complains... No need there to have to rely on their Server, always a red flag in my eyes.

yeah companies are having way to much access to your purchased Goods, dont wanna start a whole new Fire but just think about apple admitting to slowing down devices for Prodcuts with "old" Batteries. Dont even have to be some foreign company completly controlling the device.

Back to topic, im assuming hes using an App on phone from the looks of it but once both are connected within the same Wifi network no need to have a middleman to send data back and forth just have it directly accessible as you would on other Wifi devices that dont rely on you setting up an Account. On those servers are down or the Company goes bankrupt or decides to not support that product anymore you can throw it in the bin.

No. The controllers continue to work. We had a bad internet failure here and the controllers continued to function. I don't remember whether the phone app worked or not, though. Mine control the lights, and they came on and turned off on schedule.

I used to use Alexa smart plugs, but I discovered the hard way that they DO need the Internet. That's why I switched to using the ACI controllers. (I tested them first.)

It's just the phone app AFAIK, and the phone app can still connect to the controllers using Bluetooth.

Many apps do "phone home" though. It's okay with me when they're doing updates. I don't like it when they don't need to do it. They can't always stay within the local network, however. They sometimes need a server to manage the connections. For example, if the phone is connected to the cellular network and the device is connected in a network behind a router and firewall. In that case, a server is needed outside the local network to route the connections.

Here's a lookup and a route trace to AC Infinity. It looks like it's working okay.

Code:
X:\>nslookup ACInfinity.com
Server: RT-AX58U-D3C0
Address: 192.168.XX.X

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: ACInfinity.com
Address: 192.200.160.13

X:\>tracert ACInfinity.com

Tracing route to ACInfinity.com [192.200.160.13]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

  1 120 ms 120 ms 115 ms RT-AX58U-D3C0 [192.168.XX.X]
  2 135 ms 119 ms 123 ms cma01a.cmno000 [172.92.192.1]
  3 122 ms 123 ms 125 ms cr1-camano-a-be150.bb.as11404.net [174.127.182.10]

Sry never heard of the Term phone home. But yea i agree bothers me aswell if they require it although its not needed specially if its needed all the time while running to get access to its data/settings. Fine with me if they do their internet upgrade thing or some other Stuff for connections as long as you dont have to create some account and conset to some sketchy Terms of Service.
Though i would prefer to have them just on a notification base so i can manually push update via ftp or so but yea that wouldnt be consumerfriendly for the average user so i can totally understand them not going that route.

Oly moly sounds horrific if these companies can actually tell who using there equipment

Doesn’t matter if they don’t intend to sell any data they can collect

I’d be more worried about data thieves stealing thier data and putting names up on the net if the company doesn’t pay up makes you think especially when your illegal
