Is there a formula for choosing corret air pump size?

I need an air pump that is strong enough for ten 5 inch round air stones.

What is the output of those stones?

Some are .5lpm, some are 3lpm

Are you planning on one in your epicenter too?

Add up the output on all diffusers and you will have your answer.

Do you think 20 l/min is a good flow rate or too much for a 27 gal tote and an 8" disk (rated for 20 l/min output)?

For a single tub? or multiple tubs?

I've used an AP-40 in (4) 27g totes. Worked well, could have done an AP-100.

These things are for ponds, several THOUSAND gallons of water with Fish Load.

I don't think you can have 'too much' air. You just need to make sure that you aren't on the low end of the diffuser rating otherwise the bubbles coming out are weak and 'large' which is not what you want if need DO.
