Amesbury man charged after pot is allegedly found growing in secret room

By Jaime Lutz, Globe Correspondent

A 32-year-old Amesbury man pleaded not guilty today to drug charges after a package containing marijuana was delivered to his house and more than two dozen marijuana plants were found growing in a secret room behind his closet, police said.

Michael Makiej was arraigned in Newburyport District Court. Judge Allen Swan set bail at $5,000 and slated a pretrial hearing for Sept. 1, a spokesman for Essex District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett.

On a tip from federal agents, Detective Sean Leary suspected that a package containing marijuana would be delivered to Makiej’s home at 10 Washington St., said Amesbury Police Lieutenant Jeff Worthen. The detective learned that it was to be delivered Friday morning, he said.

The package was delivered when Makiej wasn’t home, Worthen said. A drug-sniffing dog led police to believe that there were drugs in the package, he added, and police obtained a warrant to search the package.
Police found two pounds of marijuana inside, valued at about $5,000 to $8,000, Worthen said.

Police then obtained a warrant to search Makiej’s house, where they found 25 marijuana plants of various sizes hidden in a room behind a false wall in a closet on Sunday, Worthen said.
Makiej was arrested Sunday and charged with possession of a Class D substance with intent to distribute and manufacturing/cultivating a class D substance.
