Riiiiiight.....

Well, Sir....I call bullshit on that one.

While SOME closed cell foams CAN.... not necessarily.....but CAN have a minimal amount of cell degredation over time and offgas if installed improperly, the amount is negligible.
If this concerns you, stick to a water blown foam. Open cell preferably.

There is foam everywhere.... refrigerators, ductwork, mattresses, seat cushions. All based off of the same basic formulations with alterations to blowing agents, fire retardants and other super secret stuff.

Foam is the BEST insulation. Period. BUT the key to it working properly rests solely on the air conditioning being properly sized for the application.

Don't know how feasible a living roof is where you are, but metal roofs are just one of the many modern building design flaws. That's why as a nation 30-40% of our energy goes to heating and cooling buildings.

I drop the underside temp of a metal roof 60+ degrees in the summer just by insulating it...... with Spray Foam. ;)

Cut Ac usage sometimes in 1/2

Power bills go down 40-60%

Look into it.

For sure, more of just saying future buildings will drop the metal all together and use what nature has proven over ages. Air is by far the best insulator. Even painting the metal white will help some.

rollin, are you in cali?im gonna go out on a limb and guess you are a spray foam contractor or salesman. How much per sq ft?What is the r value?what product are you using and is it cali AQMD approved?Very interested in cost of spray vs. conventional insulation, never see sprayfoam used in my area and im in the building trades.

Actually, no. I am not in Cali. I will be opening an office soon in Denver but I am currently in not so industry friendly parts of the country. I am a manufacturer and also have been a contractor for the past 15 years or so. There are several foams approved in Cali so that is not an issue.

What part of cali are you in?

As far as cost. In my part of the country, I could spray 3" of open cell for 1 per sq ft all day long. Or, i could do 1" of closed cell for the same. Both would work well but ideally, 2" of closed for 1.65 and 6" of open for 1.65 is a better end result.

Keep in mind, 3" of open cell foam OUTPERFORMS R-30 od cellulose or fiberglass.

I only spray 3" of closed cell foam in sub-zero freezers.

Lol, yeah, it was his imagination. If you want details, ask muir, he's here on thcfarmer. I don't give a crap.

I do agree insulation is good, but I'd recommend people look into it, especially the outgassing issue. Muir's spray foam was supposed to be some green, enviro friendly product too. BEWARE!

Soooooo, how exactly did he determine the foam "offgassed" and killed his plants?

Or is he blaming the foam because he can't figure it out?

Keep in mind, I am not saying it is not possible the foam was bad. It is very easy to install foam incorrectly. But how did he narrow it down to the foam? And the only foam that "offgasses" is closed cell because it is chemically blown, not water blown.

But yes, I do agree, the foam could have been installed oncorrectly and had some fumes of offgassing if it is closed cell, and it could have possibly done something. But how can you determine it was the foam?

If you only change one thing at a time, it is really easy to find the culprit.
