Is there a process? A microscope? how does one determine the gender of a seed?

By growing it out till it shows you it's naughty bits. There is no shortcut here. If you must have all female seedlings, buy fems. If you want to get out into the gene pool all the way, you just have to deal with this. If seedlings are slow to show, take cutting and after they root, put them in 12/12 lighting to get them to show sex quickly.

Oooh, oooh I forgot you can also haave tissue sample tests done after 15 days by most reputable labs to determine sex if time is SUPER crucial.

From my experience yes, but fem seeds also have more possible issues, so researching and choosing beans from trusted breeder with proven test results from your chosen cross is very important. An ounce of prevention...

Lots of the fem seeds that are out there are LESS costly than their regular counterparts as there is less likelyhood that the fems will go on to be in other breeders work.

Once the sex is determined then switch to 12-12 and begin spraying one branch with colloidal silver (which is suspended particles of silver in water). The branch will develop pollen sacks which have the same DNA as its female branches and will fertilize itself or any other females present. Was this your question? Kind of a crayola style answer but......
