While trying to mitigate a mite issue on harvested plants, I rinsed off the fresh buds with water. I am noticing that I don't notice nearly as much flavor and aroma from them, although while flowerng they were overpowering. Can terps be washed away? I thought they were not soluble in water, but my flavor seems like it went somewhere other than the finished buds. Any thoughts from the pros

Terps are an oil and by nature are not water soluble.

Terpenes aka essential OILS ;)

Howdy Jim hope you're well! I'm surprised you mentioned this because on the rare occasions when I spray something to treat a plant I always wash those buds at harvest

I've noticed that the buds that I've washed seem sharp, more flavorful and tasty to me than the ones I haven't washed

And I'm not usually one to notice such subtle nuances either but that's been my observation so I'm surprised that you find washing actually diminishes turps and flavors?

I took this info from Crazy Composer

Dogg (West Maui).
Before and after trimming.
.
For anyone about to meet this girl in person, I have some information for you to consider.
.
Firstly, this is among the rarest smokes to get your hands on. Only a handful of people have ever had this cut. It’s kept very tightly.
.
This herb is NOT your usual weed, at all. It doesn’t even behave the same as other herbs. It doesn’t play by the same rules. The resins are very unusual. I’m thinking the terpenes are more water soluble than most varieties. This means that moisture is more easily invited INTO the herb than any other weed I’ve ever handled. This unusual trait means this weed will soak up moisture from the air very quickly. Once she reaches 60+% humidity (where most weed is just fine to roll), this herb becomes frustratingly hard to roll up as per usual. It will squish instead of keep the tubular shape you need to achieve before tucking the paper. So... one REALLY helpful piece of advice for enjoying this strange herb is to try to roll it up when it is at about 45-50% humidity.
.
The high: as with most new terpene profiles, the body gets highest from a new variety on that first time smoking it. The more unaccustomed to a set of chemicals your body is, the more pronounced the effects will be. As this herb is so chemically unusual compared to most commercial varietals, the chemical cocktail is likely to be unusually potent for many people. So beware.
.
The scent is amazing to my nose. I know some people who don’t like it because they HATE black licorice. My wife thinks it smells just like a black jelly bean. I get that same scent, but also the aroma of amaretto cookies. Also... you know that scent in a very old bag of weed that you forgot about? That super well-aged weed smell? That’s present in these flowers... even when it’s just barely dried and ready to smoke for the first time. Did I mention this stuff is unusual?
.
We should be able to make a larger drop of Dogg to the MMMP compliant stores we work with, in a couple of months. For now, though, there’s a tiny amount being dropped at greenportcanna in Augusta today, and a small amount dropping at their Damariscotta store on Wednesday.

Ever use a vaporizer through a bong? All the delicate bright notes vanish, the basic sugar/spice/hash remains.

Ever smoke water hash and dry sift from the same grow? Same situation. Water makes complex weed very basic.

"Terpenes are oils" and we wonder why pot has a bad rep...

It might just be the strain, as other plants have kept more of their characteristic smells. The GDP just doesn't sseem to be too flavorful despite it's great look and effects. Next time I nuke the grow room to eliminate any chance of mites and then start from seed. This is the 2nd time I got bugs from a "friend" who provided a clone or two. This is also the 1st time that I didn't grow any from seed, although being a clone shouldn't have any effect on that. The smell during flowering was overpowering... I just can't figure out where all of the smell and flavor went!

Oil and water don;t mix.. terps float.. if there not floating there mixed.. if there mixed.. there emulsified.. if there emulsified.. THERE NOT FLOATING..

It says the essential oil containing the terpenes floats on top of the water and can be easily seperated.

Dude it says “containing the terps”. The terps are encased in oil. Did you even read the article linked. Thats an excerpt from it.

They are a water soluble substance encased in the oil from the trichomes. The article talks about the extraction process.

Their explanation was sufficient though.
Which is why I screenshot the quote first and linked the article it was from in case anyone was more interested.

Slow down bud.

Slowed but still lol if terps were water soluable rain water would strip these plants from day 1 of flower...

The other way yer making an emulsion is with specific equipment, its been tired and done with Vape carts and shit people tyrin to mix VG and bho.. without the right equipment its less then soluable and even with the right shit.. its only soluable for a few weeks then will separate again..

If you wanan believe everything you read i mean..

Try it in practice tho.. Check out skunkpharmresearch.com they already have a once respected outlet here before external links were discouraged.. skunkpharm has pioneered the infusion of oil water and cannabionoids.. and its not done as simple as your 2 second google cut and paste makes it out to be..

but hey goggle right? lol

You really arent getting it. And the article i chose could have been any. I scanned a few and they all said the same thing. Terps are water soluble but encased in oil so can be separated.

It obviously takes some aggitation or a procedure to separate the terps from the oil it is encased in. Maybe some washing techniques strip some terps and some dont. Rain obviously doesnt alone. But i was just trying to add information that would help solve the op’s question.

From my continued research, some Terpens are water soluble to some extent... some more than others. With over 100 different terps in cannabis, I guess some might be slightly soluble in water. Eugenol, used to anesthetize fish, dissolves in water (hence it's use in aquariums), but I don't think the water rinse is responsible for my flavor and taste issue. I think it is just the strain that is lacking the pizazz. I've cured it like I've cured countless batches but the taste just wasn't there to begin with. I don't know how many of the trichomes were washed off since I was trying to dislodge the mites, but the other strains smell and taste a little better.
FWIW, I had a bunch of the same strain from a previous grow which got musty and I never used it. It also lacked much flavor or taste, so I think it is just the cut of Grandaddy Purple that is causing my troubles.
On a side note, there is no need to get nasty or defensive about differing opinions. I guess some terps are water soluble to some degree, some aren't. Much like alcohol and gasoline.. they don't really mix but can be used to extract water and anything dissolved in it. Not the same analogy, but the idea of partial solubility is valid.

I've often wondered if I've over flushed some strains I've grown, like some one else said, stunk like a skunk until flushed.
