Ok experience from a few yrs ago,
8k plants in flower
We pulled covers off the Greenhouse about a week before flower, normal ops.
The a freak rain storm hit for 3 days.
We thought nothing of it.
We harvested, dried and cured as normal.
Same strains, the 8k that had covers off tested 22-26% respectively.
Blueberry strain.
Same strain in another row, covers in
Similar process (no rain) tested identical.
Now come the weirdest part.
Sample terpenes testing sent out (Hp lcc)
The rows that got rained on for a few days.
Tested low on the key terpenes we were after! (For extraction)
The “normal “ runs had the flavor:terpenes we wanted.
So the rain indeed affect certain flavors but not the thc.
Couldn’t smoke test tell the difference but the extraction showed loss in the lemonine

There are terpenes in some wines and beer, so they're definitely somewhat water soluble to some extent. It would make sense for different terps to have different dissolving properties.

I also wonder- Could that last rain have been hard enough to actually knock some of the trichomes off of the plants that got rained on?

That’s what we think happened, the trichomes also “looked” like it was “less” then the other rows that wasn’t rained on. So a distinct possibility of that

Exactly. Anyone who has made beer knows that terpenes from the lumulin in hops give it flavour and aroma long before any alcohol is ever present.

I think this might be what I am seeing. The potency, as tested by a very unscientific and subjective manner, seemed as good as ever, it just didn't have the taste or smell. Since a lot of compounds that aren't water soluble actually will dissolve to some small degree, so I'm not sure. The normal, pre driedcured hay smell was present and dissapated, like it always does after a few weeks, but the great taste simply didn't evolve.
FWIW, the strains that I noticed it most on were both Berry strains I think... GDP is from Purple Urkle, which is involved in the berry strain (I think) and the Doubleberry, now named dingleberry, is a berry strain as well. Perhaps the particular terps that are responsible for their unique smell is more soluble in water. I keep hoping the flavor will develop but I think it is not gonna happen. The Tangie, TrainWreck, and Green Crack all taste pretty good and were subjected to the same treatment, which was a pretty good blast of water to dislodge as many mites as possible prior to drying.
