I'm glad to have found some fellow farmers I can collaborate with! I'm planning my second grow first indoor. My goals are to yield a pound every 2months. (I consume about a pound every 3months to help with PTSD symptoms). I wanted to do a SOG with just a 400w and maybe a couple fluorescent. I want to run two grows at the same time. (Have a lower compartment where they stay for the "night") anyways wondering how this sounds to some more experienced growers. Is a 3x3 space to big for 400w with maybe some white light on the sides. For each "grow" I wanted 16 plants. Is this plan reasonable? Can I yield a pound? Should I buy two ballasts to switch at the 12hr mark to keep from over heating? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I am so happy to be the first to welcome you to the farm! I have some very dear friends from high school are still serving. Well, *she* isn't serving, technically, but the Army wife thing makes it service, ya know?

I've never grown in quite such a small space, nor have I done anything like perpetual, so I can't really respond intelligently to those questions. However, I guarantee you that we have farmers here who do just what you're asking about and I know they'll get you squared away and on your way.

I do grow SoG when I grow indoors, it's my preferred method for a few reasons, mostly because it's a *lot* easier on my back!

i dont have the answers you seek but would like to thank you for your service. i have family in the services and 1 who passed in Iraq. may he RIP. i hope you get all the help you need and welcome you to the FARM. a great place to receive lots of good info. best of luck and positive vibes sent to you and yours.

Welcome to the farm! Thank you for your service! I have tons of respect for anyone in combat arms. I serve also however I was a fobbit on my tour. 91B. People have done basically wat your thinking. They sell grow tents in that configuration. I think 3x3 is fine for 400 watts. Pretty sure it won't produce a pound though. 4x4 with a 600 could prolly do it once dialed in. Good luck and good to have you here!

Thank you fir your service!
What your planing is possible with some master gardening diailing in I suggest a scrog ( screen of green) monogrow ( clones from same host plant) and more than likely a solid veg.....the hardest parts are choosing one type of plant and waiting the initial wait after that a perpetual 1 pound per month would be beast mode....if quality (potency and effectiveness) is important I would be patient on hitting those numbers(1lb. A month) if you need those numbers then add another 400 or switch to a 600 or 1000......perpetual with one light is tough if you like raising your light for the end...there's challenges but damn near anything is possible with these plants ....
In your situation I would pay close attention to what plants help with your condition and if you build a quick tolerance to said plant ...
Best wishes, Godbless, and positive vibes!!!
Again, welcome to the farm

Edit: shoot for the moon, if you miss you'll still be amongst the stars!

i can't help with advice on what you're asking. sorry.

a pound in a 3x3 space every two months is gonna be hard

if your doing 16 plants.. i would assume they are gonna be tiny, and this is your friend. i would either do coco coir (look into it if your not familiar) as a medium for the roots, or possibly a hand made soil bed. you would need 2. so build (2) 1.5' x 3' wooden troughs with some plastic in them or some sort of water proofing. then what i would suggest is putting 8 plants in at a time, so put 8 plants in, wait 2-3 weeks, put 8 more plants into the other trough.

i think with the right strain, nutrient regimen and dialing of said space, you could get CLOSE to your mark but i would suggest having lower expectations weight wise, cuz its a lot better to be surprised come harvest then disappointed

if you have absolutely any questions just get at me homie, i run a perpetual and im familiar with SOG

scratch all of that.... maybe. lol depending on dimensions

i think if your going to get that much u gotta do a vertical perpetual grow, shoot me a PM and ill work with ya thru it if your interested. i just need to know dimensions n stuffs n i can try n help

Welcome. Thanks for your service. I had friends in the 1st and 3rd Battallions. I served with the 3/505th PIR. Great to have you here brother. If I can help let me know. MGG

Its really pushing it. Back in the day (When I was getting going, before a formal education etc) I attempted a 600w in a 3x3 space. Yield was more like a half pound.

What I did was I convereted a bathroom in my home to a small grow room. With two levels. A T5 hood on the bottom level for vegging and the upper area had a 600w HPS for flowering. This sound close to what your attempting? In my experience this will work, I was a kid when I started this (I had my card atleast)... So my construction skills where lacking but now adays with my know how I would say you can definitely create a light proofed lower area as it would be 18 -6 rather then 12 - 12.

If your trying to keep costs down let me tell you what your going to need to make this worth your while, and maybe get you closer to your yield number.

First off, You really really need some good fans. I would recommend two 4" inlines. Check craigslist, I get them for like 20$ rather then the over priced 120$ new. They're much quiter then built in bathroom fans and much more powerful (more than 4x as powerful 25 CFM vs 100+ CFM). I actually replaced my actual bathroom fan with an inline fan, keeps the shower moisture down and removes smell well. Why you need two is the fact. One inline would vent the lower area with the T5's (Which dont get very hot) into the main room or you can vent into another area (The latter would be better), dont make the vents run to long.

Since watering in such a small place is hard, I would advise building a tray system with a drain, check out my mother room (I hope it's still in my sig) My mother room is actually the converted flower/veg area. I use the old veg area as storage now.

You could definitely get away with using CFL's to veg in, pushing for upwards of a pound from a 400w is kind of high. Its really hard to meet a gram per watt with 1000watt lights, let alone the lack of penetration etc from the 400w.

I have a lot of clients who are veterans and am always happy to help you out. I like to encourage patients to grow there own medicine so if you need any help feel free to toss me a message and welcome to the farm :) I get stoned and look for someone good to rant at.

Thanks for serving brother, I too did some time at Bragg but only wore the maroon beret.
Welcome to the farm, the ppl are great and a wealth of info!!
I also require a perpetual grow to medicate a multitude of damage. Chobble is right, in a small grow space heat IS a killer...vent that shit!!! Also, to begin with choose a forgiving nute line...and keep em straight! I mix into diff colored gas cans to keep them straight (and easy to pour out of! Keep asking Q's and...

Stay patient my friend, B
