I'm no expert on light spectrum but I saw a graph showing the reds & blues and all the other necessary colours of light plants neede get drastically cut using ballasts at 50-60-70% and such to the point of eliminating almost completely the reds & blues. Your better off using a 300w at 100% than a 600w at 50% was the suggestion of that article.
I also go straight to hps soon as I flip them to 12/12.

Some ballast will let you do that others like mine say no but yes thats better using the 300 at full capacity than a 600 at 50% but you've got to read your ballast recommendation for what lamps will work or not. I've been told and saw a Youtube video saying all dim-able ballast will let you run your 300w on a 600w ballasts at 50%& 60% settings but not all ballasts are rated to do so. So you take your chances if your ballast doesn't say you can do it.

No such thing as a 300 watt hps or mh. Some ballasts are dimmable and some are dimmable and select a watt. My ballasts take 400’s or 600’s or dim 600’s down. Not all are selectable that way.

I think a way to tell is of the dimmer shows percentage or watts.

I wouldn't take the chance either but I looked into it when I had too much heat in the summer, I ended up just turning my 1000 down to 60%. A 600w bulb is quite a bit cheaper than the 1000w and if I could run a 600 in my ballast I would have done that but my ballast said It wasn't rated for that feature.

So the % dimmable does mean only dimmable. And if the say 400/600/ 1000 or which ones they are they are selectable as well.

Plants can run in Veg stage 17 on/7 off
Flower stage 11 hours on / 13 hours off ( if want to want to make your plants to go to sleep quicker , add a Emerson board led )

Vs veg stage 18 on /6 off and 12 on / 12 off flower stage

If you look at every day and count your watts of your room, it adds up. That method instead of 18/6 veg and 12/12 ( which I never got any gain to do it ) you will gain 30 hours for your veg room and and same for flower ( that’s like giving 2 days of veg electricity free )think it’s a negativity ? Dj short ( breeder of blueberry ) recommended 11/13 for flowering on plants and said that’s the way for better terps and better quality .

Directions that came with my HIDs said to turn it up to full power for 6 seconds and then turn it back down to achieve proper Spectrum
