Pot friendly apartment hunting?

Hey - I may make the plunge and move to Santa Cruz to surf AND grow pot. I live in the midwest but have been to Santa Cruz dozens of times to surf. Can anyone tell me how difficult it is to find an amartment (landlord) that is cool with growing marijuana. Since it's legal can I just "do it" if there is no stipulation in the lease, and can a person be totally up front with landlords or is it a cat and mouse game. I think you guys know what I be say'in. By the way don't surf north of SC the shark factor increases exponentially from Nov.- Feb. No real shark prob. In SC though. The sharks follow the seal population.
