Trichome maturity is always the best indicator. You will need magnification to see them clearly. Get yourself a jewelers loupe, handheld digital microscope, or magnifier attachment for your phone.

Yep magnifying glass and then do some research on the appearance of the trichomes and get them to match your taste in terms of effects.
