So as I am about to start my first grow, I had plugged in my 1000watt light, my inline fan with filter and my humidifier. I let this run for 2 or 3 days to make sure everything is working properly before I popped my beans. So of course now that I put the beans to germinate I have encounntered a huge problem and I'm hoping someone else has come across a similar situation. I woke up this morning to knocking on my door and it was my cable and internet provider company (Optimum) and he was saying that they traced a problem they are having with the modems in the area back to my house. (talk about unwanted attention!) He needed access to my garage where all the wires are and as I am down there with him he starts saying that it is like all of a sudden a few days ago I started using a lot of juice! He had asked if recently I plugged in a bid heater or something. My wheels started turning and I told him to hold on a minute and I went to my basement and unplugged all of the growing equipment. Low and behold when I walked back outside they said whatever I just did fixed the problem. Talk about some bad freaking luck! I told them that recently I decided to start growing my own vegetables inside and a few days ago plugged in the equipment. They said that it was deff the cause of the problem and that it could be affecting it for a number of reasons and also added that if I happened to not be home this morning they would have had to cut my phone, modem, and cable off! Has anybody encountered or heard of this issue popping up anywhere??? I asked them for a fix and they couldn't give me a deffinate answer, they said maybe I needed updated "quad sealed" cables running thru my entire house and or getting a dedicated power line for the equipment. All I know is that i am beyond pissed and don't feel like it is my problem that their system can't handle the juice I'm using...I dont know I am going to have Verizion come over and see if by switching to them I don't have the same problem. As always any info or advice would be great...

Look into cable shielding for your ballast cable. If that doesn't fix it , it is the electromagnetic field caused by the ballast/light that is interfering. That's crazy stuff. Best of luck. Peace

Here's a funny question that may help clarify things for anyone else who reads this thread, what does your cable/modem have to do with your power? In my neighborhood the cable company would not show up because of my power (or vice versa). They are two different entities. Also, were you having internet or cable issues before they showed up? If not, who gives a fuck if their equipment is having an issue? If their shit is not working they need to fix their stuff. You should feel free to do as you please as long as you're not having an issue and your grow isn't going to affect your shit. Just what I take from what you're saying. Hope it works out.

I refrain from saying what I would really do. But it involves removing everybit of equipment of theirs in my garage and house and leaving it in the driveway, with a call to them to come pick it up.
Then find a better service provider.

Your ballast is returning RF dirt via its mains cable into network. Get some ferrite cores around mains cable and shield your ballast or better find one that doesn't do this. If your internet cable is running anywhere in range of that RF field your also putting dirt into internet network LAN/WAN causing problems not only on your side but in the whole block.

What ballast are you using?

In the past Amateur radio operators have experienced severe radio interference from HID and HPS lights. So there may be some truth to the fact it can interfere with cable modems also.

Wow thank you all for your input...I also feel like it is their problem and feel like telling them to screw themselves but as @Toaster79 said, I kinda felt it might be my ballast bc it is literally with in a foot or so of my cable modem and some other cables...The ballast I have is a Ulti-Lumenx digital ballast...it is not noisey but at the same time I don't think its top of the line...How do I know if it is emiting RF dirt? How do I know which ballast dont do this...Another ballast I was looking at is the Solis-tek...either the matrix one or their normal one...Would that one fix it? How do I shield my ballast?

With your ballast so close to the modem and cables you can take any ballast you like and it won't change anything. Get it as far away as possible from your electeonic devices like modems routers and cables otherwise you'll have problems not only with your provider but also with other that are connected with same cabling. U're using coax cable from your modem to the outlet right?

Yes I am...Also I just read a few post about the same thing happening to people on grasscitys fourms. I feel stupid I didnt know this could happen and feel lucky my plants were not of any size for me to really take a loss. Now I am just out four expensive seeds. I read about getting a digital ballast with rf shielding built in but read that it could still cause a problem. What if I switched to a magnetic ballast? Would I have to worry about this issue at all?

Technically I dont use any tv or cable in my basement any more and could have my modem and everything brought upstairs and have all cables removed from my basement. The thing is I would still be worried that the ballast would somehow affect the cables upstairs thru the ceiling/floor @Toaster79

Remove everything from your basement and you should be good. If you still have problems then get those ferrite cores around the mains cable. If the ceiling of your basement is concrete than you should have nothing to worry about.

The ceiling is unfortunately not concrete...its wood and drywall..I actually found a thread on here called RF disturbance or something and he had the same problems as me and put up some links on how to fix it...i am about to read them now @Toaster79

Nevermind only one of the links worked and the other was about using paint that blocked out some signals....I guess the first and easiest thing to do is to remove all the cables and modem from my basement as you suggested @Toaster79 ....Then if i still have an issue, maybe getting an rf shielded ballast or magnetic ballast would be the next step...I heard magnetic one use a lot more power...is this correct?

Just get that coax cable away from your ballast and you should be golden. Magnetic ballasts do use more power. And about getting shielded ballast, there's a cheaper solution to that. Build or buy a metal cage around your ballast. Magnetic ballasts also emmit RF dirt in the air and in the electeical grid.

So metal cage (Faraday cage) like computer PSU and ferrite core like computer PSU and you're golden. Ballast are switching power supplies just like computer PSUs, LED drivers and basically all work the same stepping up voltage through high frequency.

It's the only logical explanation for huge RF noise comming from his house. Phone charger can't emmit so much crap as a 1kW ballast ;)
