Hey farmers what up! I noticed over the weekend that a corner of my roof has lifted up not just the shingles but the plywood and all. I stuck my head up in the attic and found all the plywood covered in what I suspected to be BLACK MOLD!!!! Had a roofing contractor come out today and he said yes it's black mold, (called a mold specialist today, waiting for a call back)

What do you guys think, could it be from my garden? I have a two story house (new construction six years ago) with my garden in the basement no other mold issues other than in the attic!

bet it started from gutter back up.. i think your grow would be alright in the basement but treat that's causing that mold.

Working on taking care of it very soon. I know my roof has to be replaced, just trying to find out where it came from so it won't happen again.

No gutters on the house so no back up there.

Black Mold isn't the problem..it's the effect. Sounds like a water leak..could be a ventilation issue if you live in the UK or WA state..more likely a leak though. Good luck!

My Dad use to rent a guest house that was down-hill from the main house.
The main house caught on fire, and the fire dept. put-it out.
Unfortunately, the water ran downhill and my dad's house got covered in black mold!
He actually died from it! I got to watch my dad die in Stanford Hospital in Palo Alto, Calif.
Don't mess with Black Mold! It's seriously dangerous stuff!

Sure would think a roof would last longer than six years!!! It's not so much the shingles that has failed, it the sheets of plywood under them.

Not all kinds of black mold are the toxic nasty killer stuff. Id not mess with it till its tested and treated properly. However; all mold in your home is bad news and can cause health problems.

I would be finding out why a 6 year old roof failed too. Poor construction upsets me, but when I do (or dont do) something that puts my family at risk I get really mad.

Very possible he never will cal you back..or he's out of business. I have seen this before, be very careful paying other people to do you work these days. Finding reputable contractors is important not just the cheapest guy. It sounds to me like it is definitely not your garden causing the mould. If you can actually see inside to the trusses from outside through the lifted plywood that is your problem. Assuming you get some decent humidity where you live, moisture would have no problem getting in there with the heat and humidity mould spores are having a party.

My roof has been up for 30 years from 35C in the summer to -40C in the winter and this is actually the first year there is a small leak around the skylights.

Do you have metal roof vents? Those are notorious for leaking.. Water is a tricky when it comes to roof leaks.. It can be leaking from up by your ridge cap and or vents and then trickle down 20ft before it swells the wood.. Also your insulation factors are huge when it comes to mold, but that wouldn't cause the swelling your seeing above the soffit. Is the black mold only by the wet area where the roof is leaking? Or is majority of the attic have spots?

Do you have eave and ridge vents? Did you ever mistakenly block your eave vents with insulation, thinking you were doing a good thing as many home owners do?

You should have either a ridge or gable end vents, as well as eave vents. Ideally, ridge and eave vents. With proper vent down into the eaves ensuring airflow across the underside of roof all the way up to ridge vent.

Looks like it was from a storm, blew up the corner and let water in then condensation took over from there... working with a clean up company to get the mold handled first, then new roof. The familyand I may have to move out for 2-3 weeks, not sure what I wil do with the garden. Dont like the idea that strangers will be in the house and I wont be.

Wow that is a serious inconvenience. I would be contacting the contractor that built it if possible because that is not normal. Unless you were in some serious tornado style winds the plywood should never come close to pulling of the trusses. Many contractors do shady work, I hope there is no other problems with the house..best of luck to you and your family.

I wouldn't leave it unattended, I think you're right to fear that. Def look into getting reimbursed by insurance. Look into it first in case there are some roofs they will reimburse and some they won't in your area.

Where did it lift? did it go unnoticed? Was there ice and water shield there?

Man, I got the same shit going on right now, just found it today. No ridge vent, and the extractor fan crapped out apparently. Any advice on getting this tested?
